Poly Styrene's X-Ray Spex only made one album but it remains a classic of late seventies English punk. 'Germ Free Adolescents' contains the eloquent title track as well as the singles 'Identity' and the iconic 'The Day The World Turned Day-Glo'. This is a 1978 Australian pressing.

Raw Blues - in the 1960s, Decca - somewhat surprisingly perhaps - was in the forefront of British blues (at least until Mike Vernon started his Blue Horizon label).

The Residents - stranger than fiction, larger than life. They were at their strangest when covering other people's music. Here they do James Brown's 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World' and have a stab at 'Jailhouse Rock'. And why not.

Julie Rogers' bright, clear voice is best remembered for her smash hit 'The Wedding', which reached number 3 on the UK charts in 1964. This 4 track EP contains the hit plus three other cuts. Julie went on to record some tastier pop tracks for the Ember label. I reckon she look like Monica Lewinsky.

Francis Rossi wrote this classic for Status Quo when they emerged as a psychedelic outfit - after six years of previous incarnations - in 1968. They quickly dropped the psychedelia in favour of denims and boogied on into the 70s.

It's very important to make sure that when the cold winter begins to set in, your bikini is appropriately fur lined. And you may need an umbrella in case it snows. The version of "Oh Well" on this TOTP LP is actually really good (although it sounds nothing like Fleetwood Mac)

Understated elegance and tasteful colouring was often the hallmark of sleeves by the World Record Club. This early mono gem is for "Midnight In Rio" by Brazilian pianist Waldir Calmon, with his Intimate Group, from the Club Arpege in Rio de Janeiro.

So, this Superbowl thing....looks a bit like rugby except they wear the stuff you give little kids for protection when they're out on their bikes and they stop for a rest every twenty seconds.

Imagine if Phil Spector had been English instead of American

"I met him on a Monday and my heart stood still
Da doo ron ron ron da doo ron ron
Somebody told me that his name was Arthur Sproats of 4 Railway Cuttings, Chillingford
Da doo ron ron ron da doo ron ron"

People hardly ever say "Prime Minister" because the presence of the two 'm' sounds next to each other means you have to insert a pause to separate them - so we say "Pri Minister" instead.

John Mayall - 'Bluesbreakers With Eric Clapton', 1965. Clapton left the Yardbirds because he felt that they were losing their blues purity, and teamed up with John Mayall, John McVie and Hughie Flint for this seminal British sixties blues album.

When the Beatles broke big in Britain, EMI offered them to their American arm, Capitol, who declined, believing the Fab Four to be unmarketable in the USA. So EMI then licenced early Fabs releases to smaller independent American labels, such as Swan and Vee Jay.

By late 1976 there was a sharp division appearing between the punk power of the Clash and Ramones and the standard pop fare that continued to dominate the charts. Blondie's sharp, melodic pop had more in common with the powerpop of bands like the Raspberries and they filled the gap beautifully.

DISCLAIMER:
I've been asked if all these record sleeves I post are my own LPs. No. About 50% are - the others are from the archives of my record shop which I closed when I retired in 2018.

The Love Affair were not given the respect they deserved, especially when they revealed that session musicians had played on their first singles. But despite that they were experienced, exceptionally competent musicians and, in Steve Ellis, they had a charismatic frontman with a great voice.

Tony Hatch was a master arranger and producer in the 1960s and his wife, Jackie Trent, was a vocalist of some note - they made a great team and this 1973 album shows that they had splendid taste in shirts too.
