Good morning. A little chilly in Boronia this morning but I've grown a beard since then.

A classic from the master of exotica, Arthur Lyman. "The Legend Of Pele" - who was, of course, not the Brazilian footballer but a god who came to the islands from the mystical land of Kawaihealani. The classic cover features the fire goddess Pele rising from a river of molten lava.

'Valuables' (as in "This jewellery box contains my valuables") is quite a curious word. It's a noun that only seems able to exist as a plural. Take away the 's' and instead of becoming singular it turns into an adjective. Are there other examples of this linguistic phenomenon that you can think of?

"Papa would take me to the park to see the swans.....
Hissing louder than rustling dresses of gracious ladies bustling by"

I love the sibilance in this lyric from the Incredible String Band

Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to W.C. Fields
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about
W.C. Fields forever

Whenever we're watching 'Henry V' and the speech on the eve of Agincourt comes up, Mrs Vinylsol always reverts to Blackadder mode and says "we few, we happy few, we band of ruthless bastards"

Julio Peňa : "But what if one of you is the monster?"
Peter Cushing: "Monster? We're British, you know!"

Cushing, with Christopher Lee, in Eugenio Martin's "Horror Express" (1972). The film also features Telly 'Kojak' Savalas as a cossack officer.

Still waiting for a really good adaptation of one of John Wyndham's novels. The closest anyone has come is Wolf Rilla's 1960 "Village Of The Damned", from "The Midwich Cuckoos".

Watching Steve Sekely's 1963 adaptation of Wyndham's 1951 classic 'Day Of The Triffids'. Entertaining but unexceptional, it has a lighthouse subplot and denouement (directed by Freddie Francis) which is not in the book, an appearance by Dr Who granddaughter, Carole Ann Ford, and a Ron Goodwin score.

Watching the NZ National League final between Wellington Olympic and Auckland City, live from Newtown Park, Wellington, on FIFA TV. A few short years ago there's no way you'd be able to see a match like this on television in Australia.

This is called 'Something For The Girls', from Dick Contino - and yes, the girls seem suitably impressed as they anticipate the thrills to come as Dick stretches his huge accordion.

This classic cover shot is by H. Sleben - it adorns an album recorded by the Garth Young Quartet at the Pines cabaret in Houghton Bay, Wellington, in 1961. The album features Garth on piano with Scottish saxophonist Hymie Levine and the rhythm section of Slim Dorward (bass) and Bob Little (drums).

Pink Floyd - love 'em or loathe 'em, Dark Side Of The Moon is a seventies classic. An Australian quadraphonic pressing. Unlike most countries, in Australia quad copies were more common than stereo.

Australia's independent Fable label issued over 300 singles in the 1970s, including a great deal of home grown product. This one, an original track by Josh Morgan, was recorded at Spectangle, in Hobart.

A superb slice of seventies soul/pop from Linda George, written by Steve Kipner. Born in the UK, Linda emigrated to Adelaide with her family in 1964 and later performed as the Acid Queen in the Australian production of the Who's "Tommy".

Joe Camilleri's Black Sorrows have been an Australian institution since 1983. The melodic blues/rock band were with Virgin in the 1980s; this is a promo copy of their "Country Girls" 45.
