A way I avoid making characters seem like plot devices is by thinking of them as people with their own separate lives outside of the story. Some of them are there to take the characters from point A to point B, but it's about *how* they do it that makes the difference.

Fantastic Four Issue #6 was the best one so far. It was packed with action, characters, threats, and had super-science jargon I enjoy so much. And Sue Storm is that girl.
