Most of EU-headed African migration is legal. But in the last 10 years, 3.6 million African citizens out of 4.6 million arrived through rights-based migration as asylum seekers, new spouses or family members. Only 1 million came for work or as students.

Rare off-topic post of mine: I would like to draw your attention to the excellent work of my colleagues at @tochnyi.info. After months of intense work, we have finally published our interactive map that allows you to follow the ongoing “human safari” in Kherson in detail.

An intriguing idea by @fratzke-susan.bsky.social and @meghan-benton.bsky.social:

Negotiate a new protocol to the Refugee Convention to clarify responsibilities, thus addressing the growing concerns of the destination countries.

'Legal frameworks that cannot bend will break.'
We are hearing growing calls to scrap the 1951 Refugee Convention. Dismantling it would be a grave mistake. But a Protocol could respond to concerns from different regions & be a moment to restore trust.
Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide against Palestinians, a UN commission investigating the war in Gaza said on Tuesday. In earlier reports, the commission found that Israel had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity, but stopped short of declaring it genocide. nyti.ms/484tpD5
2/2 The EU thus mirrored the trends in the Anglo-Saxon counties, although the EU dip was less pronounced than in the US, Canada, New Zealand, UK.
Strongly suggest the Commission start naming the culprits, companies and governments, that are blocking the implementation of single market rules. Otherwise nothing’s going to move.
2/2 If the EU is serious about reducing refugee immigration, it doesn't need a stronger Frontex. It needs a new visa policy.
1/2 Venezuelans, with a near-zero recognition rate for asylum but with an extremely high recognition rate for a Spanish humanitarian status and arriving in Schengen visa-free, became the largest nationality group to apply for asylum in EU+ in the first half of 2025.

5/5 The bigger picture is that the current EU asylum rules will need to become more restrictive when it comes to spontaneous applications at the external land borders and that we need even more effective border protections.

I see no other way out.
4/5 It's not clear how effectively the Polish and German governments will be able to assuage the different societal fears in their countries by continuing with their existing policies that pit one government against the other. It's looking quite ugly at the moment.
3/5 Little did the respective German governments knew that their actions would provoke a violent response in Poland, that Poland would try stop 'its' domino stone from falling and that, in fact, Poland would attempt to turn the stone over back to Germany.

2/5 The assumption was that Germany's neigbbouring countries would act in a similar manner, thus, ultimately putting pressure on the EU's frontier countries to turn down some people who showed up at the EU's external borders.
1/5 When Germany first introduced checks on all its land borders in September 2024 and when, in addition, it announced that some categories of migrants would not be allowed to apply for asylum in May 2025, the hope was for a 'domino effect'.
3/3 A glance across the Atlantic serves as an example of how bad things can get when voters thinks that immigration is out of control and that the elites are intending to do nothing about it.
2/3 Yet, somehow, the proposals of the European Commission to change the rules so that the EU could ultimately increase the current repatriation rate of 26% (2024) are being attacked by the left in the European Parliament.
