Discord onboarding is difficult for admins to set up. Roles, bots, channels, permissions, etcetc. But that complexity is also what makes the coolest spaces possible. Sometimes I join one and it’s like oh shit this is very unique. You’ve got a great setup here.

What fascinates me about online communities is how fragile the balance is between product and people. You can design rails, ranking, discovery, onboarding, but the magic is always in just creating space for culture to take root. It’s like get out of people’s way if you can.

Small communities feel human. At scale, the real challenge becomes less about growth. Moves into keeping that humanity intact. I think Facebook real names builds in some of this but not enough. You have to develop recognition over time to feel connected to a group, Discord, forum, etc.

Been super interested in how people actually connect lately. Facebook, Reddit, Discord, forums, micro-patterns like guilds, raids, niche servers, group chats. The small stuff feels more alive right now.

My sons' obsession with Marvel Rivals was so great, it inspired me to set up an automated allowance system so they can save for skins and stuff without having to ask. If anyone is looking for a nicely designed allowance system for kids, Acorn Early is a good one:

There’s a lot of AI product out there. The best way for AI to evolve is to give it away. Open-source projects and low-cost tools ftw.
