people who only play corporate fantasy games: wow, why is nobody writing anything dark these days
voredsent.bsky.social
im sorry but you do actually have to seek out and read intellectually challenging material of your own accord if that's really what you want, you will not find it in stuff that was Never Going To Be That
voredsent.bsky.social
there is like a ton of varied and experimental queer horror coming out right now, so when ppl are like "books these days are scared of being real" im like what the fuck are you talking about lmao. put down the franchise IP media
voredsent.bsky.social
are also out there writing highly emotional and abstract work that isn't just jerking off an already recursive version of medieval europe. open your minds

if you wanna critique why modern genre fiction is stagnant, look at like, idk, the deeply colonialist roots of most modern fantasy/sci-fi and how they cause palpalble friction with progressive aims. aping d&d is writing in colonialist tradition. but lots of straight ppl do this, and lots of gay ppl-
voredsent.bsky.social
not using the word "nonbinary" in a fantasy story won't save that story if the real problem is that it's aimlessly aping dungeons and dragons, and i think making these specific, smug, nitpicky critiques instead of seeing the forest of mid genre just puts people off of experimental gay work
voredsent.bsky.social
there is good anachronistic genre fiction where the characters talk about their feelings and it is a fully conscious stylistic choice. "therapyspeak" and "modern sexuality" criticisms just sound like a particular way to critique mid but specifically gay genre fiction w/out reading good examples lol
voredsent.bsky.social
i think a lot of people read a lot of very mid genre fiction & come away with very granular ideas about why it's not good, like "the characters state their feelings"/ "it's too modern" when those are absolutely fine stylistic choices in themselves, and the problem is theyre reading mid genre fiction

Happy book birthday to THE INFINITE AND THE DIVINE, which released in hardback five years ago today!

Thanks so much to everyone who’s taken the ride with these two on their ten-millennia tropical vacation disaster.
Infinite and the Divine book.

and to be expected to be poor and have my shit fully together is like. well why do i have to be a superhuman saint when that guy over there just straight up has twice as much money to make things convenient and half the worries i have

some of my coworkers for whom this is only a college job talk about graduating into like 200k salaries and im like. i am almost 30 and have never made more than 24k a year, at the most i was ever making. and other ppl just. get jobs that pay 200k a year. i don't even know how to deal w the disparity
voredsent.bsky.social
i think if like, 70% of my thoughts at any given time didn't revolve around how i don't make enough money to get through an emergency, i would have way more time and energy to work on my other personal deficits

having a real night where im like. wow other people's brains just work correctly and they don't worry about money huh

sure, it sucks if a repost gets more notes than the original, but tbh i just assume that the original was never going to get those notes in the first place, so it's merely an annoyance that might get people searching for my work rather than something i spend time thinking about

i've never felt like art reposting did anything but get me traffic i wouldn't otherwise have, so i just don't really care unless someone's trying to profit off my work

i love retro horror games bc most of them are short and sweet, but i don't have the frustration tolerance for most other retro games as someone used to modern qol and graphical parsability

trying to perfect my crochet bonnet patterns even though no one in this day and age is as enthusiastic about bonnets as i am

i don't like spaces that are both obsessed with men only and simultaneously like "men are incapable of being anything but shitty and self-hating" bc then it's just weird fandom misery fetish stuff that bleeds into how ppl treat trans men instead of ctual concern for feminist topics
voredsent.bsky.social
half of my original work IS f/f, granted!!! but only in online fandom will i get people going "why do you write that character as a trans mlm who doesn't suffer for it" as if this is somehow less progressive than writing him as a straight homophobe while also not writing women
voredsent.bsky.social
cis people who don't even care about female characters themselves being weird and snide to real trans men making art about their own experiences is such an Only Online thing
voredsent.bsky.social
im like incapable of doodling anymore bc im like "this art has to save you from medical emergency since you're never gonna have a job that will" but that's a lot to ask of myself 😭
voredsent.bsky.social
i have been making art this whole year but finishing/posting none of it bc my brain is like "this has to be perfect enough to somehow make you money" even though i don't like making art for money. i'm in a findom deadlock with myself and i don't want to be

did you know that mandarin oranges have gone through 3 evolutions, and the "regular" orange is a cross between a mandarin and a pomelo
