Their courage calls on us to do more than remember. It calls on us to protect the children of today; to guard their lives, their voices, and their right to grow up free, educated, and safe across this continent.
On this day, we remember the children who stood up in the face of brutality against the evil Apartheid system; who marched, resisted, and gave their lives so others might live with dignity. The story of South Africa’s liberation is not complete without them.
Today marks two important days:
1. #InternationalDayOfTheAfricanChild, which was first initiated by the OAU, now AU in 1991 in honour of those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976.
2. #YouthDay in South Africa, which commemorates the #SowetoUprising of 16 June, 1976.
