"The hive. My light's the wrong frequency." She demonstrates—purple instead of yellow-green.

"They said I'm confusing the mating signals."

I open the jar. "So start a new trend."

She hesitates, antennae twitching. "What if nobody follows?"

"What if somebody does?"

She lifts off, purple beacon pulsing. In the darkness, one distant light flickers violet back.
