Trying to learn #watercolor. So fun, but so hard without natural talent. Made this account to post my paintings so I don't annoy the followers on my main account.

Not sure I know how to answer that. This is a pretty small painting in a sketchbook. I guess it would look different bigger on a wall.

Omg. You don’t understand how amazing that compliment is. Schaller is why I started painting. I saw one of his paintings, lost my mind, bought his book and decided I had to try to learn to do this. He’s amazing.

Failed attempt at shadows. I guess I went too dark? They were really dark in reality but I keep forgetting I’m not a camera #watercolor
Amateur watercolor of a New York City stoop with foliage throwing shadows on a door. The shadows look really bad.

Sat down to do a quick sketch of a momentary image I saw out of the car window today. I can’t believe how well it came out. Probably the best trees I’ve ever done. #learningwatercolor

Harbor scene. My boats are too pale but I had so much fun with this one. #learningwatercolor

A bee I saw on my balcony this morning. Interesting lesson: it looked pretty bad until I darkened the background. Then suddenly it looked better. #watercolor

Maybe it’s because I adored him so, but while it’s not all that good, it’s far away the best portrait I’ve ever been able to do. #watercolor
Amateur watercolor portrait of Robert Redford RIP. The hair and the eyes are pretty good. The rest not so much.

It's really fun. I recommend it. Use fresh masking fluid though. (this is actually my second attempt. My first was with old fluid on bad paper and it didn't come up and was ruined.) My instinct was to start small in case it didn't work. It's just more manageable if you do a small one.

My first attempt at "pouring" (I didn't really pour, just splashed paint around.) It came out so much better than I expected! I have to figure out how to soften edges at the end of the process, but I'm going to do more of this. I think it looks really cool. #watercolor #messingwithmasking
Amateur watercolor of a bearded man sitting at a bright window, achieved by masking out the lightest bits, then splashing paint around, then masking out middle values, splashing more paint and masking out a third time before throwing on the darks. The effect is very neat.

This made me think of you @johnlurie.bsky.social. The title more than anything I think.

I have now painted this five times in a row. Each time, one element is good – the sky or the statue or the water or the background. But it's never the same one. #watercolor

I originally intended this to be a preliminary sketch for a larger piece. But after living with it for a few days I actually like it as is - scrappiness and everything #watercolor #watercolorsketch #watercolorpainting #watercolorcityscape #cityscape

Faking a marina. I actually just painted three boats but I think I faked the rest pretty well! #watercolor
