Hi. A note about this portal, subscribers, and support.

I’m going to use this new subs-tacky place to develop and seek commentary on work-in-progress writing: the research-oriented “scholarly” variety as well as more creative and speculative works.

I would pay any amount of money to watch "tech oligarchs in the Cairo airport terminal 1 passport queue"
That said, I really would love to see Musk airdropped into Lagos, Mumbai, Cairo or Jakarta with nothing but $5 in his pocket (and no right to call on any of his existing contacts or resources) and see how it goes. Follow him around with a camera. Now that would be reality television worth watching.

For those thinking about the role of tech companies in Gaza, a quick thread on IBM, Thomas Watson, & the Holocaust.

+some surprises below for those of you that think you know how the story ended...

Watson ran IBM during WWII & thru a subsidiary sold the IBM punch card system to the Nazi regime.

It's not regulators curving tech in a less harmful/damaging direction or big tech prioritising conscientiousness over profit that'll shape the technological future of society but rather it's public backlash that's going to be key. the tides are turning www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

as part of my current "speculative economies" residency at au JUS in Brussels, @maxhaiven.bsky.social will be visiting 28/29 Apr. We'll be launching his new anticapitalist boardgame and going into conversation on gamification, fascism, and the endless Crusade.

Radical Gaming
A new left-wing board game puts players in the role of maniacal plutocrats trying to take over the world. Its creator explains how it responds to the wider phenomenon of ‘gamified capitalism’.
