Wausau Pilot & Review WESTON – The D.C. Everest boys soccer team clinched its fourth-straight Wisconsin Valley Conference championship with a 3-0 shutout of Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday night at D.C. Everest Middle School. Landon Gray scored in the 15th minute, and Lucas Auner and Hezekiah Mletzko tacked on goals in the second half as the Evergreens cruised to the home win and improve to 12-2-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

WAUSAU - Central Wisconsin Musicians will bring two performances to Wausau in October. The CWM Concert Band will bring to the stage "Blast Off! A Musical Voyage" at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at the UW Center for Civic Engagement Veninga Theater, 625 Stewart Ave., in Wausau. Admission is $10. Central Wisconsin Musicians – directed by Patrick Phalen, with guest conductor Austin Kappel – will take listeners on a journey through sound and space with works inspired by exploration and adventure.

WAUSAU — The city of Wausau will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late October for the grand opening of the South 72nd Avenue multi-use trail extension, which is part of the Wausau Business Campus. The event will be held at 3 p.m. Oct 27 along the trail just north of Sunny Vale Park. Parking is available at the park. The South 72nd Avenue extension is a segment that extends along the west side of South 72nd Avenue from Sunny Vale Park to Stewart Avenue, creating an overall connection north to International Drive.

ANTIGO – Aspirus Langlade Hospital and Clinic will host a free seminar in October designed to inform attendees about falls prevention, common causes of hip pain, and treatment options that support a healthier, more active lifestyle. Dennis A. Denzin Dennis Denzin, Colonel, US Army (Ret.), 84, of Rothschild, passed away on October 5, 2025. Dennis was born in Medford, Wisconsin to Edward and Anna Denzin. Dennis married Pamella Denzin of Rothschild, Wisconsin on January 21, 1989, in Wausau, Wisconsin. In 1959, he joined the Army and earned the rank of Colonel. In his free time, Dennis enjoyed: trap and skeet shooting, traveling, hunting, collecting patches, scrap booking, listening to Polka music, and spending time with his family and friends.

WAUSAU — The Wisconsin Department of Tourism has awarded two Joint Effort Marketing Grants totaling nearly $80,000 to Visit Wausau and the Greater Wausau Prosperity Partnership to advance destination marketing efforts for two regional outdoor recreation initiatives: the Great Pinery Heritage Waterway and Ride Wisconsin Gravel, Visit Wausau announced this weerk. Both campaigns align with the state’s growing emphasis on outdoor adventure and sustainable tourism.

STEVENS POINT - At a time when news about the planet often sounds dire, a different message of hope and inspiration will be shared at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Larry Nielsen, professor emeritus of natural resources at North Carolina State University, will present “Lessons from the Great Conservationists of the Past” at 5 p.m. Oct. 14 in room 120 of the Trainer Natural Resources Building, 800 Reserve St., Stevens Point.

MERRILL – Northcentral Technical College has opened its Community Safety Simulation Center at NTC’s Public Safety Center of Excellence in Merrill, NTC announced this week. The CSSC, at 1603 Champagne St., is designed to prepare people to address emerging security threats through immersive scenarios and classroom instruction, with an initial focus on schools, places of worship and healthcare environments. This 3,500-square-foot facility boasts a fully adaptable, multi-room space with 360-degree smart screens designed to immerse participants in custom training scenarios.

MADISON – With forecasts calling for another massive wave of birds migrating over Wisconsin tonight, Oct. 10, Lights Out Wisconsin urges people to turn off nonessential lights and close shades and sign up for emails to warn of future high-risk mass migration events. Email alerts are sent the same day to subscribers to remind them to turn off nonessential outdoor lights and close shades that night from 11 p.m.

Dear Editor, The Weston's pedestrian/bike trail survey is wide open with no verification, allowing non-residents and minors under 17—who don't vote or pay taxes—to hijack the results. Why prioritize this non-essential project when fire protection and waste management remain underfunded? The 2025 asphalt pedestrian/bike trail (0.5 miles from Alderson to Birch on Weston Avenue) cost $66,275.27 total, with Weston's portion at $33,137.64 to connect us with Rothschild.

This week, some in City of Wausau government began their push for a spring referendum in which voters would decide if the municipality is allowed to exceed its property tax levy limit, which is imposed by state law. We are told by referendum proponents that putting the choice on the ballot may be necessary for the continued funding of 12 firefighter positions.

Damakant Jayshi Wausau’s Committee of the Whole on Thursday agreed to hold another meeting next month to continue discussions on a potential public safety referendum and the scope of professional help the city may hire to educate residents about it. The city faces a funding shortfall of about $1.55 million needed to maintain 15 public safety positions currently supported by a mix of federal ARPA and SAFER grants, other external sources, and city contributions that expire this year and in 2026.

In the past, this would be the time to talk about “the mayor's budget.”  However, given the disdain and disrespect heaped on the mayor by a majority of the alders, we can safely assume that any proposal from him is dead on arrival.
