4️⃣Ask a professional - if you're ever unsure, speak to your GP, a pharmacist, a sexual health clinic, or of course you can talk to SASH, for accurate, judgement free advice.

3️⃣Avoid 'viral' myths - just because something is popular, doesn't mean it is true, especially on social media apps like TikTok, Instagram or even Reddit.

2️⃣Look for evidence - if there are no sources or studies mentioned, and its just opinion based, be cautious and look for other signs.

1️⃣Check the source - stick to trusted websites like the NHS or ours, and avoid anonymous posts or influencers without any credentials.
It's happened to all of us - we've seen something online and thought its true, only to find out a little while later it was in fact not - we might even feel silly or annoyed we got fooled so easily!

Here are 4 tips to help you spot or avoid misinformation online around your sexual health:

If you think you could be chronically online when it comes to sexual health and wellbeing, or are worried you’re beginning to, reach out to your local sexual health services for information, advice and support.
We need to be aware of the potential for misinformation and manipulation, especially in areas as sensitive as sexual health, relationships, and wellbeing.
As we engage with digital platforms, it’s important we all prioritise authentic and respectful communication, and make sure we seek out credible sources of information.
With incredibly convincing deepfakes, bots that sound human, and algorithms shaping public perception around sexual wellbeing and gender stereotypes, now more than ever it’s becoming harder to know what is and isn’t real online.
However with the introduction and advances made with AI, at what point does being online cause a detriment to our sexual health and wellbeing?
When it comes to navigating our sexual health and wellbeing, being online as part of navigating that is almost a given; we can go online to order a free STI kit, find partners on dating apps, or find other people with shared experiences like ours to help us feel a sense of connection and community.
Being ‘chronically online’ means spending all your time online which can cause you to lack any real life or in-person experiences, skewing your perception of reality.
This years theme for Sexual Health Week 2025 is ‘Chronically Online’. It looks at the way our current digital landscape with social media apps, online dating, online influencers and AI can be distorting and influencing our attitudes and behaviours around sex and relationships.
Your experience could help improve services and support for others.
