AGREE furiously with @samuelmoore.org (Radical Open Access) the 2012 Finch report was a very destructive document for OA. The commercialisation of OA: journals need quick processing, publish as many as possible, little intervention of humans. This is an anathema to scholar led publishing #OASPA2025

Danny Kingsley @dannykay68.bsky.social telling a room full of publishers that the lack of good faith in R&P agreements has to stop. What planet are commercial publishers living on? Constant grind for library staff to deal with what she describes as this “garbage”. #OASPA2025

just had this convo with my colleage @barbarahissa.bsky.social - we have too many examples of wonderful, open infrastructures that unfortunately are not being used by researchers - how to engage them?
kjsanders.bsky.social
I haven't seen too much on author engagement in the discussions around the construction of European Diamond OA infrastructures. I would love to know the organic appetite for all of these services and/or any incentives that are being used to 'drive' their uptake.

Same with commercial proprietary software when we could have been investing in people and building our own infrastructures.

Interesting times have happened over the last twenty years while we have wasted millions of pounds in public resources pursuing commercialised forms of open access publishing.

And here I was all ready to blame good ol' research assessment again 😅

Chemistry: It is impossible to have equitable no-apc open access for high quality journals.

SCOAP3 in a nutshell. The effort is collaborative - not just shared funds. Used particle physics agreements as basis for the #OpenScience governance.

Check out my new op-ed urging NIH to disallow taxpayer dollars towards journal publication fees — something both publishers and scientists have played a role in perpetuating.

It's so saddening to see how a movement with such good intentions has been co-opted and commercialised to such an extent that it's effectively now just a means for channelling public money in corporate pockets. For me, if it's not Diamond I don't want to know. #OpenAccess

What might seem like a small announcement—it’s just one institution—actually carries substantial weight and has a strong symbolic meaning.

@utrechtuniversity.bsky.social, has taken another bold step: it won't renew its Web of Science license. www.uu.nl/en/news/acce...
Access to Web of Science will end on 1 January 2026
The university library has decided not to renew the licence for access to the Web of Science citation database (including Journal Citation Reports).

DM: Incentivized reviewers had slightly higher positive response, and were a bit faster in sending in reviews.
The incentivized manuscript surprisingly had a slightly longer time-to-acceptance. The peer review time, however, is just a small fraction of the total editorial time.

Yes, exactly what I was getting at. Abbreviations that are standardized are great. But these examples here in this thread highlight the need for a common language - thus the importantance of the work that IUPAC and others do! Great discussions (and examples) here!

In today's episode of Why Standards Matter - chemists vent frustration about the lack of standards for abbreviation.

Anyone else have a particular bugbear about the use of ambiguous abbreviations in the organic and biochemistry lab.
ACN: one person’s acrylonitrile is another one’s acetonitrile
IAA: iodoacetamide or auxin?
I’ve seen enough near-misses through ambiguous labelling to last a lifetime.
