Tsukishima soaks up the energy in Koito’s face. The slope of his nose, his hair running in rivulets against his sweaty temple, and the light in his eyes as he flicks through Tsukishima’s dictionary like there is something worthwhile to uncover.
He is beautiful. Painfully, achingly beautiful, the way only a young and wealthy man can be. Tsukishima has seen men just like Koito before, turned inside out onto the grass to expose the handsomely-shaped bones that their skin stretched over. That is the power of young soldiers and flagbearers, Tsukishima supposes—that thousands of them can die, but the wonder never wears off.

“When we arrive in Otaru … before I leave for Asahikawa, First Lieutenant Tsurumi wants me to spend the night with him one last time.” A pause, and then Koito adds with a quaver, “H-he said he’d ask you to be there. To be our … ‘go-between.’ Has he asked you yet?”
Exhaustion sinks deeper into Tsukishima’s bones, contending with the buzz that lingers wherever Koito touches him. “No, he hasn’t. I will talk to him, and remind him that you prefer not to share him with other men.”
“If it’s with you, I don’t mind.”

“I’m ridiculous? You draw him like it’s your goddamn job. Bet you doodle him at work on your little office notepad, too.” When Vasily pauses and looks away, lips rolled together, Saichi stands and stomps around the couch, shouting, “Look me in the fuckin’ eyes and tell me you’re just friends. Just try it.”
Saichi, Vasily signs, fingers cutting the air in sharp movements. The hairs on his jaw ripple as the muscle flexes underneath. Calm down. They’re just drawings.
A knot tightens in Saichi’s throat. For once, Vasily could do what Saichi asked of him. At least fucking try.
