The greatest danger with starting any horror franchise off the back of a recognisable, monstrous icon is that if you go to the well one too many times, your established horror hero runs the risk of becoming silly. From Freddy Krueger becoming the dream demon equivalent of a jokey, late night chat show host, to Pinhead fashioning new Cenobites out of a CD player, to Jason Voorhees' inevitable trip to space, the more familiar we get with these titans of terror, the less serious we ultimately take them.

If there's a common complaint about the various superhero shows that emerged from the union between Netflix and Marvel is that no matter who the character was, be it Luke Cage to Matt Murdock, an episode count of thirteen always seemed to be around two or three episodes too long for the stories being told. As a result, there always is sense that the back third of the season tends to drag no matter what superpowered criminal threat is brewing.

When it comes to tactless examples of vigilante cinema, there's something about the simple sleeze of James Glickenhaus' fascinatingly nasty The Exterminator that really stood out. Lacking even a rudimentary sense of political moralising that even Michael Winner's Death Wish mentioned at least once or twice, the brutal misadventures of frazzled Vietnam vet John Eastland almost carried a perverse since of purity about it as it roasted pedophiles alive and lowered mob bosses into meat grinders.

I have to be honest, I thought that considering we'd already had the lion's share of an origin story thanks to his sizable role in Daredevil, I was banking on Netflix's Punisher show launching out of the blocks like a crazed greyhound as it let Marvel's controversial anti-hero do what he does best. However, it seems that I have to adjust my expectations a little as instead of being graced with a show that sees the relentless Frank Castle clearing up the streets of various forms of scum, we're actually getting something way more deliberate than just a dude with a skull on his chest shooting capos for kicks.

It's an inescapable fact that nobody's perfect. Think of your most cherished cinematic idol and chances are they screwed the pooch at least one time in their careers and delivered a,product that they're probably not entirely proud of. For example, James Cameron practically disowns Piranha II entirely and voicing a planet eating robot in Transformers: The Movie probably didn't equal making Citizen Kane in the mind of Orson Welles.

OK, so the second season of Netflix's shot at Daredevil had some issues, but within its rather uneven story was born something that more than made up for a minimal Kingpin, a midseason shift to Elektra and way too many ninjas. It seems almost deliciously fitting that The Lawnmower Man, a "Stephen King adaption" that utterly ignored its source material, would itself spawn a sequel that also ignored its predecessor to a near insulting degree. In fact, Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace seems to be so desperate to move on from its own origins you wonder why the powers that be didn't just make it its own thing entirely instead of crafting a follow up that connects its plot as clumsily as trying to get Lego to stick to a Duplo brick.

At this point in the Sniper timeline, it's genuinely tough to think of anything new to say about the sixth entry in the neverending, sharpshooting franchise - which, as a reviewer, is a little worrying disconcerting as there's still five more of the bastards left to go. However, one thing that does stick in my mind is that it must have been rather frustrating for franchise lead Chad Michael Collins that even after three movies as sniper prodigy Brandon Beckett, the script still has him wearing his Billy Zane/Tom Berenger training wheels as he's once again flanked by a series original.

Well, I guess it's back to the plot, then.After last week's episode basic gave us the quintessential, near-perfect, solo Daryl Dixon adventure that finally embraced the western gunslinger aspect the character has always carried since the first moment he swaggered on screen. However, I suppose it's time that we actually got back to the main story at hand as numerous triangles, twists and confrontations have been gradually brewing that finally seem to be paying off.

Is it me, or does the killer shark movie finally seem to be entering a period of creativity that goes beyond shamelessly ripping off Jaws, Open Water and The Shallows? I mean, yes, there's only a limited number of ways you can present the plot of a hungry shark (or sharks) gnawing their way through a cast list, but lately it really does feel like anyone who approaches the sub-genre has something slightly new in store.

Despite the hold it seems to have on a section of cinema goers of a certain generation, I've never overtly been a Tron kind of guy. I can certainly appreciate what people like about them and the particular place it holds in cinematic lore in respect to the birth of computer generated imagery in film and the effect it's had on the medium ever since (no Tron, no Pixar - period) and I've always had a special place for the way the films have looked and sounded, but the movies themselves has always left me a little cold.

After eight weeks of multiversal hoopla, crippling depression and alternate Nazi earth's, Peacemaker finally reaches the end of its second season in quite a strange position. While the general thrust of the season has been of a high standard and the jokes and lunacy has been consistent with all the other fucked-up shit that James Gunn has whipped up in the past, the rather strange pace of season 2 has been frustratingly inconsistent with the middle chunk of episodes getting a little too bogged down with the doings in other universe.

Whether you want to accept it or not, the Twisted Childhood Universe (aka. the Poohniverse) isn't going anywhere. After kicking off in 2023 with the bewilderingly pointless Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey, we soon ballooned into a low budget, Marvelesque, connected universe that first saw Pooh and Piglet get a heavily retconed sequel and then moved on to making Peter Pan a child snatching pervert.
