The challenge was to “Choose 20 books that have stayed with you or influenced you. One book per day for 20 days, in no particular order. No explanations, no reviews, just covers.” These were the books. I also tried to pick books that I didn’t see others posting. #20bookchallenge #booksky

At Costco, my 8yo daughter saw a big family of 6.
She saw them as one family with 2 moms.
Later she revised: “Maybe one’s the oldest daughter, the other mommy probably just didn’t come with them.”
Even though she probably wasn’t correct, I admire her logic and inclusive assumption. #LGBTQ #positive

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. Also, if we are more accepting of human variation, we can see much more benevolence amongst those that are uncharitably referred to as neutral by the concrete and neurotypical.

Yes. The benevolent is good willed. Having an agenda doesn’t mean that that agenda need be malevolent.

Can’t speak for everyone else, but I am definitely working on getting my showing out there. It may still come off a bit like telling, because I work primarily in the arena of nonfiction. Concretizing the abstract can still be a bit abstract when what you’re communicating is already a bit abstract.

Just as Semmelweis had discovered, doctors and medical students often moved from performing autopsies or treating infected wounds directly to examining pregnant women, unknowingly transferring lethal microorganisms to their patients. Lister’s antiseptic methods, when implemented, drastically reduced these deaths, including those related to childbirth. With improved hygiene and sterilization practices, maternal deaths plummeted, and childbirth became significantly safer.

Thank you for explaining this. I got in an argument with someone before who cited this book series. Having not read it, I could only cite real world studies to argue against their referencing fiction. Knowing that the authors were actually attempting to portray authoritarianism badly makes sense.

An addition to his metaphysics being faulty, since he was >200 years before the advent of economics, it implied bad economics. People are not units of work. We’re are the valuers. Value is information that is transmitted into the economy through consumption which isn’t loss but the point.

You can blame Jean Calvin for this one. It’s his predestination based Protestant Work Ethic. Those few elect by God to go to heaven can be recognized by the their health & diligence. The remainder are not blessed and nothing can really be done to change their ultimate outcomes. He was wrong.

Grrrr…. Tariffs (import taxes) are one of the most regressive, impoverishing, and economically damaging forms of taxation. They also increase the chance of war. Thankfully, the rest of the world is not falling for the stupidity of it this time.

Deportations and the security apparatus around them are clearly cruel, inhumane, disproportionate to any crime, and fundamentally impoverishing. We should end them and advocate for a constitutional amendment to allow people to live, work, and travel freely.

We ostensibly live in a constitutionally limited federal democratic republic of more than a third a billion people. When a wrong is seen, identify and communicate it. Then identify and communicate mew institutions or rights that can prevent that wrong in the future.

When, with my current convictions, I look into the past, I can endure the miseries to which I have been subjected only by looking at the same time into the future; I see a time when only cases of self-infection will occur in the maternity hospitals of the world. In comparison with the great numbers thus to be saved in the future, the number of patients saved by my students and by me is insignificant. If I am not allowed to see this fortunate time with my own eyes, therefore, my death will nevertheless be brightened by the conviction that sooner or later this time will inevitably arrive.

Neurodivergence brings insights that are never respected, but that we owe our very existence to. It gave us a hero that was committed to saying the right thing even if it wasn’t socially accepted. Ignaz Semmelweis was right. He should be taught in all history books.
