On this day in 1958, Tottenham beat Everton 10-4 in the First Division.

The 14 goals scored is the joint most in an English top-flight match — along with Aston Villa 12-2 Accrington in March 1892.

The picture is of Everton's Jimmy Harris, who scored a hat-trick in defeat.

On this day in 2015, Sergio Agüero scored five goals for Manchester City in a Premier League game vs Newcastle United... before being substituted in the 66th minute by Manuel Pellegrini.

It remains the last time a player scored five goals in an English top-flight match.

There are more players at German clubs in the England squad than there are players at Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea combined.

With Crystal Palace on the cusp of their longest unbeaten run ever, I've dived into history and explored other English clubs' record streaks without defeat.

Whose is the longest? And shortest? Which team's was set in the 19th century?

My piece here:

Crystal Palace are on the cusp of their longest-ever unbeaten run. What is your club’s?
Palace last lost a match on April 16 — 5-0 away at Newcastle United — and since then have gone unbeaten to move level with the 1969 team

Are the feats of past footballing greats at risk of being forgotten due to the game's expanding schedule?

My column on what there now being no players from the European Cup era of the European Cup/Champions League in the tournament's top 10 scorers means:

As Erling Haaland joins the European Cup’s top 10 scorers, are yesterday’s heroes being forgotten?
There are no more pre-1992 players in the European Cup/Champions League's list of top 10 scorers. Does it matter?

Real Madrid play Kairat in the Champions League tomorrow in arguably the biggest mismatch in the competition's history.

It's the 15-time champions of Europe against the one-time European Railways Cup winners.

I've compared the two teams:

On this day in 1953, Alfredo Di Stéfano made his debut for Real Madrid after a contentious transfer tug of war with Barcelona.

He won the European Cup/Champions League five times with Madrid and scored in all five finals — nobody else has scored in more than three EC/CL finals.

On this day in 1892, Derby's Steve Bloomer scored the first of his 314 goals in the English top flight. Only Jimmy Greaves (357) has more.

Bloomer is one of four players to score five goals in a game for England, and the last to do so outside England: v Wales in Cardiff in 1896.

On this day in 1929, Sándor Kocsis was born. He scored 75 goals in 68 games for Hungary — the best goals-per-game average of men with 50+ international goals since WW2.

He scored a hat-trick in consecutive matches at the 1954 World Cup; only Gerd Müller in 1970 has matched this.
