I also think this was due to pervasive Japanophobia from the mid-80s to the late 90s, when Japan became the world's largest economy (and the United States has big insecurities about non-white countries being better than them). Most positive portrayal of Japanese culture (even if wrong) was targeted.

Fun fact: Saturday Night Live first aired on NBC on October 11th, 1975, the same night that The Bugs Bunny Show first aired on ABC 15 years prior.
