ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW

A series based on a scene from the 1959 film noir.

The original scene was meant to elaborate on the character of the man. But in developing this reenactment, I grew more interested in the story of the woman who made a bad decision.

One man, Johnny, is a black night club musician with a gambling problem. The other, Earle, is a white racist ex convict who has served time for manslaughter. Two scenes briefly contrast the home lives of these two men. Johnny loves and tries to provide for his wife and their young child. Earle has no real attachments, though a girlfriend has let him stay at her place. It is Earle's scene that is depicted here. The woman who shows up at his door is a young mother with a baby. She had expected to have a night out with her husband. But after Earle rudely rebuffed her request for a babysitter, her husband decided to go out with his friends instead, leaving her home with the baby. When the baby has gone to sleep, she goes to see the girlfriend. Annoyed to see the man instead, she angrily gripes about being left home alone. As she turns to leave, Earle takes her arm. He immediately apologizes and lays on some charm. Out of curiosity and boredom, and a desire to get out of her apartment for a while, the woman walks in through the door. A moment that reveals the woman's interest in the stranger next door. She spots a mirror as she steps inside. She stops to check her hair and adjust her dress.
