David McGuinty, Canada's Minister of National Defence, has responded to Donald Trump's claim that America has "never really asked anything" of NATO, that the alliance sent only "some troops" to Afghanistan and that "they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines."

It's pretty blunt.

I was indeed wondering why we had so much persistent fog over the last week in the area, which is somewhat unusual for the area.

There's always criticism levied at newspapers for meek headlines, passive voice, and both-sidesism. It's often valid.

But the fact is: if you pick up an physical newspaper and actually read the thing, especially right now, you're going to come away with a pretty stark look at the state of America.

What other communities on Vancouver Island and the Salish Sea are getting this fog? It seems like an irregular amount of fog this season compared to prior years, at least in Nanaimo.

Multiple rides to work over the last week or so in this pea soup.

This is, in my opinion, not only the correct moral/ethical/legal position but also the correct political framing. Everyone can see the agency is out of control; everyone can see that it is constantly violating human rights. "Scrap it and start over" is the moderate position.

I wonder if we all (Canada, Europe, etc) can collectively run the clock to the US midterms and shoulder the impact of tariffs. Seems preferable to this absolutely outrageous nonsense.

1) engagement has been stable for six months now

2) the "point" of bluesky is different for every person

3) one of the ways the internet has gotten worse has been the constant compulsion to try and make every platform the biggest thing on earth instead of a Nice Thing For Some People
If Bluesky is to grow and become a viable alternative for the "Global Townsquare," which was the point, it needs to compete on engagement and virality is a part of that.

It isn't competing. Engagement here has been falling for a year. That's a problem if you, like me, want it to survive and thrive.

This is a reminder to everyone with aging parents to talk to them about their finances, and scams.

Really, talk to your parents about scams, and that they speak to you first when anybody talks to them about matters involving money.

The book club I’m is reading the “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder”. As it happens, my dad is visiting for a night, so now we’re watching ”Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”, which has been on my list for a while now.

We’re only 10 minutes in. Holy shit!
