Neither book offers simple solutions, groundless hope, or five steps to rebuild a church. The moment we're in is too complex for that. Instead, each offers its own version of creativity and solidarity that will help both clergy and church members think differently about the present and the future.

Either of these books is valuable on its own. Read together, they can become catalysts for pastors who feel stuck and congregations struggling to muster hope. They are the reflections of four pastors who believe in churches and know that God still does too.

Two recent books, each co-authored by two pastors, offer insight to church leaders who feel stuck and congregations struggling to muster hope in a time where maintaining a successful religious community is more difficult than ever.

Andrew Torba has launched christiannationalist.com to push #ChristianNationalism (so apparently it is a thing). Top of site declares "Christ is King," which shows how King language is being used by those who push CN in addition to those who don't: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/christ-the...
What Is Christian Nationalism? | Jesus Christ Is King

It's Christ the King Sunday, which was created 100 years ago. But the claim "Christ is King" is used both to challenge & advance #ChristianNationalism, so we should consider the theological tension:

Another heretical video from DHS (x.com/DHSgov/statu...). They keep kidnapping Bible verses to justify kidnapping people. I wrote previously about their misuse of Scripture: publicwitness.wordandway.org/p/the-bible-...

Cheney funeral shows what we wrote in 'Baptizing America' about Cathedral: "The attempt to be both a house to worship Jesus & a house for all Americans simply isn’t tenable" (bookshop.org/a/110819/978...). They can't be both "house of prayer for all people" & "great church for national purposes" 3/3

Christian Nationalists co-opt what is sacred, twisting it to serve profane political power. They misuse the Bible, baptism, and communion.

So it’s no surprise to see a theological declaration like “Christ is King” also being used not to lift up Christ but to advance racist, antisemitic politics.

Merely saying "Christ is King" is not enough because that statement has been co-opted to justify #ChristianNationalism & push far-right antisemitism. We must unpack the theological tension more carefully.

Many pastors will use this coming Sunday as another time to remind people of the dangers of Christian Nationalism.

While that seems like a natural implication from declaring “Christ is King,” a Christian Nationalist politician just got his state to recognize the liturgical day.

It's wild that Michigan House members approved resolution to declare "Christ the King Sunday" that was sponsored by far-right Catholic Christian Nationalist. And it's surprising how little attention this inappropriate move has received.

We are seeing a Christian Nationalist politician like Rep. Josh Schriver in Michigan promote the upcoming Christ the King Sunday as he advocates for Christian Nationalism in ways that aren’t too dissimilar from Pope Pius XI when he announced the first Feast of Christ the King in 1925.

“Christians haven’t done well with kingship — not in history and not now. We’ve far too often desired our own Jesus-Caesar to kick earthly kings and emperors in the teeth. We’ve wanted our Jesus ... to triumph politically and execute not justice but vengeance.”
