🗓️ February 2023
Few players have adorned the front cover of World Soccer more often than Pele, with his first appearance coming in January 1961. Sixty-two years later he made his final appearance, shortly after his death.

🗓️ February & June 2007
No reflection on the last few decades of football would be complete without a mention for these two. Lionel Messi had become worthy of taking sole spot by mid-2007, just months after Cristiano Ronaldo had featured front and centre.

🗓️ January 2006
Some players just make for perfect cover stars and Ronaldinho, wearing the iconic Brazil No.10 shirt and with an expression of pure joy, undoubtedly fits into that category. Here he is being named World Soccer’s Player of the Year for the second time in a row.

🗓️ January 1997
Another player that would become a staple of World Soccer front covers, Ronaldo adorned this issue after being named World Player of the Year for 1996. The Brazilian superstar was back a year later after winning the award yet again.

🗓️ April 1995
A sign of the changing times, with the use of one striking photograph for the cover becoming a thing of the past. This was also an example of World Soccer’s record of highlighting rising stars, in Juventus’ Alessandro Del Piero and Real Madrid’s Raul.

🗓️ April 1982
Whether in the colours of Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli or Argentina, Diego Maradona was, unsurprisingly, a regular cover star throughout the '80s. This was his World Soccer debut, back when he was still a promising one to watch ahead of that summer’s World Cup.

🗓️ February 1977
A photo that captures the essence of the era: the ball itself has just left the frame, cleared by Ipswich Town’s No.6, Kevin Beattie, while Leeds United’s Gordon McQueen and Joe Jordan watch on – with absolutely everybody caked in mud and drenched with rain.

🗓️ November 1971
In an edition that raged against spiralling transfer fees, Steve Kember, who had just joined Chelsea for a fee of £170,000, graced the front cover. “Transfers: Has football gone mad?” Ironically, this was the first issue priced at 20p, an increase from 15p.

🗓️ February 1966
Team photos became a regular choice for cover images, but the first side to feature on such a cover was Brazil in February 1966. It's difficult to think of a more iconic combination than the Selecao at Wembley, taken ahead of a 1-1 draw with England in 1963.

🗓️ March 1964
For the first three-and-a-half years, the majority of World Soccer’s front covers featured an action photo from a game. But the March 1964 cover broke the mould with a portrait of Brazil full-back Djalma Santos, taken ahead of an England v Rest of the World match.

📚 To mark the 65th anniversary of World Soccer, we dived into the archives to pick out some of the most iconic covers from the magazine’s six-and-a-half decades... 🧵

🗓️ October 1960
This is the cover of the first-ever edition of World Soccer, out almost exactly 65 years ago.

🪄 Mora can't move abroad until he turns 18 years old in October 2026, but that won't stop Europe's biggest clubs queuing up to sign the Tijuana attacking midfielder - especially if he continues to impress for club and country.

🌎 He seems sure to be involved for the co-hosts at next year's World Cup, but that doesn't mean he's not fully focused on the #U20WorldCup.

"It's always an honour to wear the national shirt, whether it’s with the senior side or the Under-20s," he said ahead of the event.

🏆 Mora made headlines by becoming Mexico's youngest-ever player during the summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup success, and the 16-year-old's three appearances weren’t just cameos - he played a big part in El Tri's victory, setting up the only goal in the semi-final.

🇲🇽 Gilberto Mora has made an exciting start to the #U20WorldCup, scoring twice against Spain in his nation's second group stage match.

They’ll be based at the historic Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey, which reopened in 2023 after a major renovation project restored it following years of neglect.

This time, their blueprint is simple: be a community-driven club with a focus on talent development.

The Cosmos are back - the team that once boasted legends like Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto.

From 2026, the club - now dropping “New York” from their name - will compete in USL League One, the third tier of the domestic pyramid.
worldsoccermag.bsky.social
Based in a village of fewer than 1,500 people and having nearly gone out of business as a third-tier club just seven years ago, Mjallby are on course to pull off a footballing miracle in Sweden’s top tier.

The season ends in November and they've already played Hammarby twice.
