Ksi Lisims LNG was pitched as a net-zero project. But the B.C. government’s approval says it will likely burn natural gas for years, causing “significant adverse effects” on emissions. Critics warn the project undermines the province’s climate goals. thenarwhal.ca/ksi-lisims-l...

This project and the associated PRGT pipeline are set to bring major changes to northern B.C., including more conflict. The pipeline crosses numerous First Nations territories, including Gitxsan and Gitanyow. As @thenarwhal.ca’s northwest reporter, I’ll be paying close attention as it all unfolds.

B.C. just approved one of its largest LNG projects yet.

Ksi Lisims LNG will ship 12M tonnes of gas a year overseas. Ministers say it will benefit the Nisg̱a’a Nation — but also admit it will worsen greenhouse gas emissions.

All of the promises around B.C.’s nascent liquefied natural gas, or LNG, industry are big, reporter @writermjs.bsky.social writes.
But what does it actually mean for the Canadian economy? And for your gas bills?

Last week, we asked our readers to chip in $60,000 to cover some of the costs of our press freedom lawsuit against the RCMP. Never in our wildest dreams did we think more than 1,500 of you would step up, pitching in a total of … 🥁🥁🥁 … $140,000! 🎉

“We’re seeing this big push towards LNG expansion to diversify Canada’s exports beyond the United States, but these are multi-billion dollar and multi-decade projects … Investing in LNG as a supposed transition fuel in the meantime would be a long, costly detour.”

Tree planting is a microcosm of broader society — sexual violence is everywhere. And the culture and situational factors at play in the industry, where remoteness and isolation crash into a work hard, play hard atmosphere, increases the risk of assault, especially for young women. Read with care.

From Canada’s Bill C-5 to B.C.’s Bill 15 and Ontario’s Bill 5, new laws to fast-track major projects are suddenly popular with Canadian politicians. Why are they in such a rush? And what do we risk by building big things fast? via @sobittersosweet.bsky.social #bcpoli thenarwhal.ca/thenarwhal-c...

Spent the past few days with an incredible group of ppl talking about wildfire and journalism — difficult, important conversations we need to have. Feeling inspired and honoured to be in the room. Grateful to the folks who organized, everyone who was there and all those on the frontlines
