On a podcast from yesterday, our friends GOG talked about their Preservation Program and mentioned absent ultrawide support as one of the signs of game deterioration (as noted by our community member Phantom).

“To be perfectly honest, it’s harder than we thought it would be,” he says. “There’s like 3,000 games on GOG that we created the base of over the years. And when we started the Preservation Program, we wanted to take the next step and to have all of those games refreshed and switched to our newest tools and solutions. And to give them a lifetime guarantee: as long as GOG exists, we’ll keep maintaining those games on the platform. What that practically means is that you should buy the game today, launch it in 10 years on your modern PC, and it will work. We are guaranteeing that with the Preservation Program.

“But what we’ve found out is that the games and how they work has deteriorated way faster than what we thought. And we are not talking only about the game not launching. We are talking about more subtle things as well, like the game not supporting modern controllers, or the game not supporting ultra-widescreen or modern resolutions, or even a simple thing like being able to minimalize the game, which is an essential feature today. Modern gamers expect to be able to minimalize the game and then to bring it up without issues.”

The aim was to have 500 games in the program by the end of the year, but it’s now likely to be between 300 and 350.

Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow is now released on Steam and Epic, but we already have a Detailed Report on it. It was first submitted in 2011, so it may need revisiting though.

Alien: Rogue Incursion Evolved Edition, the non-VR version of Alien: Rogue Incursion, released today. According to its developer, the game supports ultrawide resolutions, though we have not independently verified this yet.

We can confirm that Alien: Rogue Incursion Evolved Edition includes ultrawide support.

Note: Ultrawide resolution may not be applied by default on launch, but can be adjusted manually through the in-game graphics settings. The game has been tested on multiple common ultrawide monitor resolutions.

Borderlands 4 is another game set to have ultrawide support. The latest 2K games have protection from tampering, significantly limiting the games' modding capabilities, so the extent of native ultrawide support might be crucial here.

Gears of War: Reloaded is an updated port of Ultimate Edition, with an enhanced presentation at 4K resolution and 60 frames-per-second for the campaign, and 120FPS for multiplayer. Reloaded also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) displays, as well as spatial audio technology. Additionally, the port collects all previously released post-launch downloadable content (DLC) from Ultimate Edition, including the bonus campaign, multiplayer maps and player cosmetics.

Gears of War: Reloaded explicitly advertises its ultrawide support, but it is a downgrade compared to Ultimate Edition. Though the vertical FOV is preserved, the camera placement does not match 16:9. To make matters worse, the new game uses EAC, preventing it from being improved by modders.

One of the next best things a developer can do if they have not added native ultrawide support yet is elevating a trusted community mod which offers that. The developer of the new indie game Heartworm has done just that. Props for valuing the community.

Generally positive news reported by our community member SP4RT4N3R: The Last of Us Part II Remastered and South of Midnight both have native 21:9 support. However, there are black bars at the cutscenes in South of Midnight.
