In this equator-centered satellite loop, it’s easy to see how much shorter daylight is in the Northern Hemisphere compared to the Southern Hemisphere on this 3rd day of astronomical winter. 🌎🛰️

Darkness lingers in the top left at sunrise & encroaches on the top right part of the image at sunset. 🌅

❄️🎄White Christmas Update 🎄❄️

Milder air along with strong winds 💨 and heavy rain 🌧️ will erode snow cover across the Southern High Plains and Midwest this week.

High pressure takes control for most areas ☀️. Meanwhile, a series of Atmospheric Rivers will bring significant snow to the northwest US!

Look at that sharp snowfall gradient 👀❄️

The teal shading in this satellite image highlights where snow is on the ground (brighter colors mean more snow).

📍 Springfield, IL picked up 8.0” of snow over the past 3 days
📍 St. Louis, MO saw only a trace

🌊❄️ Why Michigan Isn’t As Cold During Arctic Blasts ❄️🌊

Lake Michigan plays a huge role in protecting the Lower Peninsula from the worst of the cold.

Cold air is forced to pass over the relatively warmer waters of Lake Michigan, which helps moderate temperatures before that air reaches Michigan.

After catastrophic flooding in the Pacific Northwest this past week, another FOOT of rainfall is expected over the next 2 weeks.

When several ensemble means show this kind of signal, it’s worth paying attention to.

Shown here are the GEFS, ECMWF-EPS, and and ECMWF-AI-EPS.
