Bornean orangutan, roaming freely in the digital forest, swinging from branch to branch, keeping an eye out for stinky durians and crawling insects (read: code smells and bugs). Highly arboreal, mostly solitary.

By appropriating the sparkle symbol to represent AI-powered features, tech companies want you to think AI is magic ✨. Critics and skeptics alike should push back against this trend and embrace alternative imagery. #reclaimthesparkles
How the Sparkles Emoji Became the Symbol of Our AI Future
Companies including Google, Slack and Spotify picked the same icon for their AI applications, thanks to Silicon Valley’s ‘hive mind.’

TIL there used to be a company behind Nautilus, the file manager. To me, it has always been the flagship GNOME app and my personal favourite – most GNOME apps are a bit too bland for my liking, but Nautilus strikes the right balance between features and restraint.

[1/2] As an orangutan, I deplore the explicit mention of “hooman” in the term 𝘏𝘰𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 (HIG), which is needlessly exclusionary and reflects a narrow, anthropocentric world view.

A thought-provoking essay by @mako.cc. The bottom line: it's the intrinsic ethical value of free software that truly sets it apart from non-free alternatives.

The same can be said of the real advantage democracy affords, especially at a time when authoritarianism clearly has its utilitarian appeal.

I still remember first learning about Jane Goodall when I was a schoolboy – Roots & Shoots came to our school one day and gave out rulers made from recycled ink cartridges. Her grace, compassion, dedication and way of life have been an inspiration to me.

Thank you, Dr Jane Goodall. 🙏

Muscle growth feels awesome – regardless of gender – for orangutans and hoomans alike. I say this both from my first-hand experience during puberty and from the exhilaration I’ve observed among hoomans.

In fact, the Dalai Lama said as far back as 2015 that he could possibly be reincarnated as a “mischievous blonde woman”. Surely the screenwriter/producer of 𝘋𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘞𝘩𝘰 must have taken inspiration from this and acted on it first. 😂

[1/2] Over the years, it has become increasingly apparent to me that recursion is deeply ingrained in the mind of RMS – the man simply lives and breathes the idea. For example, GNU is a recursive acronym, and the very concept of copyleft is form of recursion if you think about it.

My verdict: while embarrassingly crude in its current form, it can potentially grow into something great over time. Adding support for VS Code's `keybindings.json` would be a good start – being able to use familiar keyboard shortcuts in the terminal should prove especially handy on headless servers.

The characterization in this article is spot on! In my experience, Linux tends to fall short in areas that matter less in the server world. Aside from the audio stack, battery and power management is another weak link that comes to mind.
