OK CASE IN POINT. had a customer who could only speak ilocano and even tho i could understand every single word, i could not reply HHNNGGGHHH the frustration i feel LMAO and the only other peep who could speak filipino COULD ONLY SPEAK TAGALOG AND DIDN'T UNDERSTAND ILOCANO orz

Other side note super tangent: Tagalog and ilocano sound nothing alike, and I can only tell the difference bc if u speak Tagalog to me, I will not understand a word you’re saying. I only understand ilocano which further adds to my shame of being un-Filipino haha

Also side note: I grew up thinking ilocano was the dialect ALL Filipinos spoke bc every Filipino in Hawaii speaks ilocano. I later learned it’s bc the plantation workers all came from the region in the Philippines that speaks ilocano

it is Filipino American history month and I am always reminded how un-Filipino I am bc I don’t speak the mother tongue nor do I know much about the motherland’s culture. BUT ALSO how un-American I am bc my parents were immigrants so they were also trying to figure out how to be American.
