He died while trying to shoot a bear because he's never seen one in the area before. He didn't know better, then didn't survive because of that.

Note: Fun fact, before he was reborn as a child God, his toxic mother convinced him he was a monster.
So when he got reborn he appeared as one.
Later in life as a grown man he still kept this appearance up because he was never truly confident in himself.
