Popped along to Wollaton Park yesterday to see what Laura from @yorkarchaeology.bsky.social and her merry band of Nottingham Uni archaeology students were upto. Somehow I managed to time my visit with the traditional 'Posh Lunch' day to celebrate the end of the dig! Hurrah! #archaeology
A group of students wearing orange high-vis vests gathered around a table eating a buffet lunch A blue tub with wooden handles poking out sat on grass with a muddy knee pad in front of it A wipe-board leaning against the side of a van with a list of song titles relating to 'Africa' with a hot water urn and a mug in the foreground. Two students wearing orange high-vis vests working on an archaeological drawing of the site. One is holding the board and drawing with a pencil whilst the other is pointing at the board.

Here's one of our team up to their shins in mud (thank goodness for those wellies!) photographing a section using a North arrow and a 0.5m measuring rod. These two tools are used to accurately record the orientation and archaeological details of the deposits and features observed in the section.

At our Wollaton dig, we’ve uncovered barbed wire, shreds of clothing, and a possible boot heel plate that may link to the 1945 camp which housed German and Italian prisoners.

We’ve also recovered artefacts dating back to the Medieval period!

Here’s a look at the final discoveries from We Dig Derventio!

We reached Roman material — some coins, hobnails from boots, a hair pin… and one mystery! 🧐

It’s a small spoon-shaped piece, but not quite deep enough for a spoon or ear scoop. What do you think it could be?

After clearing the 20th-century layers at We Dig Derventio, we’ve uncovered features that might link to the old railway or even the bowling green – perhaps drainage?

We also ran a mini-dig at @derbymuseums.bsky.social, where young archaeologists recreated artefacts they uncovered!

Another week of the @yorkarchaeology.bsky.social dig at Chester Green in Derby. And through some excellent grit and determination, we managed to persuade the ice-cream van to drive over to the site! Nothing a bunch of hot, sweaty archaeologists enjoy more than an ice-cream!

📷My own.

What’s been happening at We Dig Derventio this week? 👀

Our team has been hard at work uncovering more of this fascinating settlement – and there’s plenty of action on site!

Couple of pieces of ceramic from the @yorkarchaeology.bsky.social dig in Derby. They're slightly curved, so maybe from an ale jug belonging to someone protective of their beer. With a message that, without the proper training, it's illegal to use the jug and you'll be prosecuted! #archaeology

Over at We Dig Derventio, we’ve uncovered a series of Victorian and 20th-century pits filled with bottles and pottery! 🏺

We've also enjoyed a tour of Derby Museum’s galleries and welcomed around 40 visitors to a busy Ask the Archaeologist session! 👷‍♀️🗣️

Still lots to uncover!

Rebecca volunteers with us each summer at York Archaeology, and has just received her three year recognition award from Benedict, our Volunteering Officer 🥳

She's an archaeologist from New Mexico, who spends a few days at JORVIK Viking Centre when her travels bring her to the UK!

Congrats Rebecca!

Another fun few hours down at the @yorkarchaeology.bsky.social We Dig Derventio dig in #Derby. Lots of lovely people, lots of lovely soil, and lots of lovely finds! My personal fave was finding the last bourbon biscuit in the packet!

A sign on a wire fence saying "We Dig Derventio". The background is blurred, but people in high-vis vests can be made out. A close up of a find from an archaeological dig. A very worn and corroded badge sits in a gloved hand. A smiling white woman wearing an orange, high-vis vest, sat down at a table looking across at another person. A row of people's hands digging in the soil with trowels. The shallow depth of field means the image is focused on a single person's hand holding a small find.
