Incidentally, there are at least 3 waterfalls in the Lake District that bear the name 'Sour Milk Ghyll' albeit with the 'ghyll' part not all spelt the same.

I may be wrong but I think the word comes from Old Norse and can be spelt ghyll or gill and generally means a ravine.
