This weekend I started creating some VFX for collecting the Totems. Not 100% happy with the sound just yet, but the VFX work I did feels exciting to finally see in action!

Brown was my first pick-but I think its a little too close to the skin tone. I think somewhere between brown and purple would be a good shade

Been working on a new level! Here's where it is now, versus how it started! I always love seeing how an art pass transforms how the level feels.

Jim gets a swirly in my new whirlpool shader! 🫡

Planning to have platforms across a giant whirlpool for the player to get across as the final challenge in the level! The large whirlpool can be seen from the start of the level, acting as a centerpiece.

DAY 2 I've given the lilypad mechanic models and textures! I also implemented an elastic variant that launches the player like those rubber popper toys we all had as kids. Still working on making the geyser sounds less grating to the ears though...

Yesterday I started adding steaming-hot geysers and accompanying lilypad platforms! I also implemented a "lilypad seed" that can be used to grow your own platforms on water and geysers.
Is this a clever way to introduce the seed mechanic?

DAY 3 of adding THROWING ENEMIES by their tongue! Now you can swing them into other enemies to K.O them. I also added enemy item drops today. They bounce like in Paper Mario 64! Until rigs are up, this is prob last day of the tongue stuff. #unrealengine #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame #3dplatformer

DAY 2 of adding the ability to THROW ENEMIES by their tongue! Added indicators for both the grab point and the targets. I also set up a little scenario to showcase the tongue swinging! Will probably make the target expand when hit eventually.

Effects look great! Personally, I would keep it to just when the player shoots for now. It's already a bit tricky to tell which one the player is and I think adding a bunch of those onomonaepea everywhere would make it a little tougher to distinguish them from the crowd.

I had fun with it, but my biggest gripe personally was how linear the movement was. On a flat plane, I don't think I'd enjoy controlling AstroBot. They released speedrun levels, but I wish there were more base movement options to choose from so finding the fastest path would be more engaging.

I'm pretty sure in the Input Action if you switch it from "bool" to "1D Float Axis", modern controllers will return from 0-1 how far the player is pressing the trigger down. I've done it before and if I remember correctly this was what I did.

Day 1 of adding the ability to THROW ENEMIES by their tongue! Will have to wait until rigs are done to add any IK /animations, but really happy with how much I was able to get finished today. Will probably work on VFX for the indicators next!
