The cover of Vanity Fair’s 32nd Hollywood issue is all about men, featuring stars like Jeremy Allen White, ASAP Rocky and Glen Powell. It is the first edition of the magazine that is entirely under the direction of its new editor Mark Guiducci. Why men, now?

This is "Quayside, Appledore" by Brynhild Parker from 1932. Bryn painted extensively in the town around that time so this is one of several pieces by her of Appledore. The painting is in the collection at Ulster Museum. #BrynhildParker #Appledore #Devon #EastLondonGroup

Painted in 1886 after his honeymoon, Anders Zorn’s 'Summer Delight,' depicts his wife Emma waiting for her husband who is rowing the boat; this is a study of the finished work and shows an influence from the French Impressionists but with a distinctively Scandinavian palette.

'Travellers.' (1929) Eduard Ole's painting has captured passengers on a long train journey, much as a candid photographer might do. Ole, an Estonian artist, was influenced by the work of the New Objectivity, formed during the 1920s as a reaction against expressionism.

This is "Appledore" by John Cooper from 1935. The tower on the horizon was Chanter's Folly which was, very sadly, demolished in October 1952. It had fallen in to disrepair & it had been deemed to be unsafe. #JohnCooper #Appledore #EastLondonGroup

'Eel boats, Dinan,' (1928) is from the period when Christopher Nevinson was turning towards a realistic, traditionalist style of painting, departing from the abstract modernist works of his early career and WW1 period.

In Herbert Badham's 'The Night Bus,' (1943) the interior lights highlight the different figures and their gestures, all still, fixed in the moment. A woman reads a magazine, a man smokes, the conductor chats to a passenger.

With named storm Amy #StormAmy in the news this morning, maybe this one of "Windy Day on Marine Parade, Southend" by Brynhild Parker from 1930 might be appropriate. It is in the collection at the Beecroft Gallery in Southend. Originally exhibited as just "Southend", the modified title is perfect.
