Jane and her work had a special way of bringing you in.

She undoubtedly inspired entire generations of conservation biologists, behavioral ecologists, and optimists — Myself included.

She will be missed. 🧪🌍

Ponderosa pine smells like butterscotch.

Go ahead, sniff one the next time you're in the western US. Some say "vanilla", some say "oh no, my nose is covered in sap."

Let's talk about birds, butterscotch, forest fires, blue wood, & boring beetles.

But mostly this thread is about terpenes.
From a blog called "CreationsDawn", a photo of the author smelling a ponderosa pine. The author wears a green cap, light blue-green shirt and red camel pack. They are sniffing a tree with pine bark, with a sort of red-orange color. More trees in the background.

We do science at places like Teakettle in the hopes of informing better decisions. But moments like these make it feel like our science is just informing future historians of our decline.

The Garnet Fire has burned through a place I have worked since 2002. A place I hold dear. We knew this wasn't a matter of if, but when. Unfortunately the leadership on the Sierra National Forest didn't have the same urgency that we did. My eulogy for Teakettle.

Have you ever heard of predatory journals?

Our new study—published this week in Journalism Practice—suggests many science journalists haven't.

When they were familiar with predatory journals, most said they weren't worried, confident they'd "be able to spot one if they saw one."

Details in 🧵👇
