New paper out on the impacts of fire on 5 small vertebrates across SE Australia.

High severity fire has a substantial impact on threatened broad-toothed rats and glossy grass skinks.

We also highlight the importance of habitat refuges for ameliorating impacts of recurrent fires.

Shocking to see extensive mortality amongst the remnant populations of Silver Banksia at my old study sites. It's been an exceptionally dry summer but I've never seen it this bad before. #drought #climatechange
A silver Banksia tree in centre of the image has brown dying leaves. A view into a grove of silver Banksia with a number of dead mature trees. Thankfully some have survived. More dead silver Banksia along a roadside on the edge of a grassland reserve. These are near Corindhap in Western Victoria. Three dead silver Banksia in a grassy woodland. I found many dead individuals in this reserve.

Yayy 🌱🪲🐝🐌- A list of stellar ecologists and myself showed that (1) species interactions can be summarised at the guild level, except for a few critical species, (2) they occur along a continuum from positive-to-negative, and (3) they have relatively weak strength except between plants!
A Continuum From Positive to Negative Interactions Drives Plant Species' Performance in a Diverse Community
We explored the patterns of species performance in a real-world community, dependent on pairwise and higher-order interactions with species belonging to the same and other trophic levels (plant, herb....
