my point is that by choosing to get in on the joke instead of just giving us a faithful translation, they’ve made a choice to *not* translate the original, which robs us of the original message the devs wanted us to interpret. and now i’m just sitting here thinking about what was lost.

they’re not supposed to be “laughing *with* us.” and by getting in on the joke like this, they’re essentially trying to create an artificial meme that’s just a reanimation of another meme that’s already old…but that’s another thing.

the devs only had one shot at translating this card’s name for the first time, and their choice showed that they were more concerned with the players liking them than they were with faithfully delivering the message the devs wanted to send - but it’s not their job to be “in on the joke,”

a localizer’s job *can* be to repurpose the original for a new audience for one reason or another, but the *tone* of the original work needs to allow for it, and mizu5 is *not* an event that is asking for its message to be refitted or repurposed, it deserves as much faith to the original as possible

i’m just now finding this out but my immediate reaction is that they ignored a crucial part of what art is supposed to be
art is supposed to show something to the audience so they can interpret and react to it
a localizer’s job is to recreate that experience for a new audience as best they can
