Happy International Hack Release Day!

This year's project is for FE7U and should look eerily familiar to folks here.

I got a badge on FEU for 300+ people clicking on the thread link here. I hope everyone had fun with this silly project. I'll get back to working on it one day...

I don't know how to sum this up. I have more that I want to say, but I am having trouble putting things into words.

Do your own work.

The German FE4 translation team having permission to use things from DDS is good--for the German translation.

As far as I can remember, the operative word is "can't" and not "wouldn't".

The ending bit of the FAQ here and this bit from the SF forum post are just...incredibly poor taste.

->
This is a snippet from the Lil' Nordion forum post on the Serenes Forest forums. It reads:

If BookOfHolsety, DDS, or any other member of the Project Naga team wishes to restart their project, these files may also be a helpful base to start with.

There's a few bits in here that I feel are important:

I don't think it's surprising that bookofholsety, the leader of Project Naga, would have no interest in communicating with the LN team considering that a) they just want his work and b) book has been publicly negative toward them in the past.

LIl' Nordion (henceforth 'LN') was posted on the 9-year anniversary of the thread for Project Naga (forums.serenesforest.net/topic/63676-...), the translation that it steals.

There's an incredible section in LN's FAQ about how they don't have any **explicit permission**.

->
This is a snipped of Lil' Nordion's Frequently Asked Questions document that reads:

Q: Did you get permission from Project Naga?

A: Yes and no. As far as we are aware, the project has been abandoned and the main coder has not been in touch with the project lead. Both of them have also disappeared from the internet with indications that they have no interest in communicating. Attempts to reach them for an explicit permission were made in the past few years, to no avail.

What we do have is:
- Permission from the German team to use their project files as a basis for our own patches. They, themselves, had explicit permission from DDS.
- BoH allegedly said to someone else that he wouldn't stop us if we made a Spanish patch?
- DDS shared his FE4 assembly code with the Project Exile team in exchange for our own code if he were to work on FE5. From one coder/project to another, Miacis is now in possession of that code.

While this is certainly not ideal, we believe this qualifies as due diligence given the circumstances. Our goal is obviously not to steal or overshadow the Project Naga team in any way, and we’d gladly collaborate or assist them if they were to continue their own project.

Yesterday a group of folks in the Fire Emblem ROMhacking community posted "Lil' Nordion" (forums.serenesforest.net/topic/107147...), a project that boasts a few features:

* Tools to build someone else's project
* Edits to said project
* Consent by lack of response

AuraWolf appears and hits us with an incredible advancement in UI tech with their Whimsical Unit Menu. I'd like to imagine some kind of music should play as the game cycles through the menu.

Dragz introduces the Dark Souls of GBAFE growth displays with their Growth Grades hack.

Personally, I think that this has impeccable vibes compared to the typical numerical growth displays that people use.

Cadbury's Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken Alternative is an FE7/FE7if reimagining featuring a whole host of custom skills and mechanics made in the Lex Talionis engine.

While Cadbury didn't mention IHRD specifically I'm accepting it into the family on account of its release date.

The FE5 portraits I made for @zaneavernathy.bsky.social a while ago! Athos and Vaida are new since the last time I've posted this sheet anywhere, I think :)

A collage of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade (FE7) characters made in the portrait size of Fire Emblem: Thracia 775 (FE5).

From left to right, top to bottom, the characters are: Canas, Elbert, Ephidel (unhooded and hooded), Erk, Fargus, Fire Dragon, Karel, Florina, Hannah, Helman, Jerme, Kenneth, Limstella, Nergal, Athos, Nils, Ninian, Teodor, Zoldam, Lyon, Sonia, Nergal (again), and Vaida.

Once again, I am a third of Glade's votes for CYL.
This is a snippet from this year's 'Choose Your Legends' poll for the game 'Fire Emblem Heroes', showing that the character Glade received a total of 19 votes.

Yearly reminder:

I rarely have anything to post, and when I do have something it's likely to be about my struggles implementing something.

Oh, and the occasional quirk I run into while working with FE5. Those are fun to post about.

Thanks for reading.

But, playing the project, you just walk over and hit them. The wall opens up. In 'The Peddler Merlinus' enemies will spend time cutting down the snags in the forest in order to get to you.

Everything works as it should. ->

The simple screenshot hides the immense amount of work that went into making breakable tiles. Under the hood, they are fancy invisible NPCs. Defeating them triggers events (typically, map tile changes).

Custom tilesets, AI, targeting code, display shenanigans... They touch quite a lot. ->

Coming from the GBA community, I took many features of the later games for granted when I started this project.

Another thing in this screenshot that doesn't exist in Thracia 776: the breakable wall on the left. Unfortunately for me, FE5 doesn't have anything that I can adapt to make these work. ->
