I was sitting near people committed to their own comfort, at the expense of everyone else.

It was self-focus to the point of rudeness. As my late mother used to say, “Zerlina, you aren’t the only one that exists in the world.”

At my lowest points of grief I’ve come back to this question over and over, even when the idea of being happy seemed so far out of reach: Who am I to want to be happy, when in the midst of grief, the most you could hope for is to get out of the bed or eat food?

If you're in a season of waiting, this your sign: No one is going to hand you the life you want. You have to go and take it.

This doesn’t mean blowing up your life. Don't ignore the fear that comes up when you do something different. Acknowledge it and do it anyway.

Moving to Sicily, it was impossible to ignore how much of my American life was shaped by an endless cycle of waiting. Waiting for the right opportunities, waiting to feel "enough". But f*ck all that.

Life in Palermo taught me something: No one here was waiting.

There’s nothing that can prepare you for being solo in another country when you get sick. One of the reasons that you really want to prioritize rest is because eventually your body will force you to rest. And that’s exactly what happened to me.

What I realized is that loneliness doesn’t disappear because you live abroad; it shifts when you start saying yes to connection. I have lonely moments but I can always find something to do with someone in the community here or I do it alone and meet new people.
