Those who patiently tolerate my posts may wonder about my preoccupation with small details in nature/objects/textures Well there is the intrinsic aesthetic & beauty BUT mainly - looking at the small helps me cope with facing the - at times seemingly impossible - big issues

Yep, saw that - it’s spectacular

Interesting for the #HelsinkiBikeCommute to track the rapid freezing of this fast flowing river site over the past 10 days
…..will we get to complete ice cover?

Looks great

They are 28” which I find to be a great all round winter tyre….coping with snow & sheet ice…..have used 34” in the past but this year went for these…..guess I am lucky we haven’t had much snow yet

Two of my passions merge: Cycling & sea ice

Never get tired of the excitement of cycling on top of the sea 🤣

One for the #seaice needs…..some fast ice exhibiting a stunning network of brine channels…..even some brine draining out the bottom forming frost flowers in the air (more usual on the top of ice 😀)

The instructor who tried to teach me to ski concluded
"You are very efficient from getting from A to B, but have the elegance of a troll"

Bay is well and truly frozen - always fun to walk where boats roam at other times of the year

Some spectacular hoar frost crystals in the evening sun

We use the New Zealand Seafloor Community Classification to explore how representativity of benthic communities could be enhanced in MPAs. We found that a small increase in spatial protection (1.5%) can result in large increases in the representativity.

I so enjoy having to go back to field notebooks…..today had to look back at what we did on an ice floe in the Weddell Sea on 2 Dec 2024…….I found the missing numbers and then languished in “ice floe sampling nostalgia” over a cup of coffee 😀
