Last tip: do not overlook the skirmish games. Kill Team is great to play and has some nice models; small squads allows you to explore many different factions without committing to a full army. And Necromunda... has the coolest models ever made, hands down. Plus, it's narrative and super fun! [end]

For example I have Necrons because I'm deeply in love with their lore, but they are boring to paint. So I also got space marines (+ chaos ones) because they are a fantastic canvas to create homebrew lore, heraldry, and converted models. And some Votann just because space dwarf are cool! [continues]

The only good recommendation is to pick what you like! Take a look around the model range of the factions and go for what inspires you. And don't be afraid of liking more than one thing! Many people have different armies that scratches different itches. [continues]

40k enthusiast here! I share the same interests and that's how I got into the hobby, I absolutely recommend it. One of the great things is that there are many ways to enjoy it (books/media/lore, painting, competitive games, narrative games, TTRPGs) so anyone can find their own way to experience it!

I think elves are cool, even elfball decks have fun tricks to keep things interesting. Same for rats.

Slivers can be very annoying depending on how hard you push them.

(Infinite) tokens is the definition of annoyance for me tho. Got killed by something like 52 squirrels once. Hated it lol.

It’s gonna be such great fun, the seeded prerelease packs are top notch to jump into the set. And I think everyone in the universe can agree that dragons are just always cool
