It's fine to be considerate to ppls situations

Charge when the work begins, adjust payment deadline as needed. The awkwardness should not be on you accommodating cause you did a job and need to be paid, it's on others to account financially when possible.

I'm hearing use deadlines cause you can change those too. One of my regulars will give me a heads up if they can't pay on time so I'll just add a few weeks (or however much time they need)

I had to get in the habit of as soon as I agree to work I send out the invoice to pre-empt my own nonsense and forgetful brain. Plus I'm sure ppl wanna pay you on time and if you do with a deadline everyones covered

Why not send the invoice with like a month deadline to pay (or however line it usually takes you to finish work)

This way they can pay whenever so everyone feels less pressured AND if they don't pay by the deadline then they don't get the work until it's paid.

Or charge to begin the work.
