"Commissar" has the Russian vibe, but the Chinese Communist Party is the real master at this indoctrination of students.
They have never let up.
Peter Hessler's 2024 "Other Rivers: A Chinese Education" was a fascinating read about how this intersection of party control & education plays out.

You summoned the Mencken demon!😺
"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."
-- H. L. Mencken.

Imagine you live in Alaska and earnest Democrats consistently suggest giving Murkowski kudos whenever she does something cost-free to her but mildly supportive of basic decency.
[insert scream here]

I'd never read W.E.B. DuBois "The Souls of Black Folk," so did that yesterday. Written in 1903, when he was 35. Searing.
And here we all are, 122 years later, with hysterical raging racists in charge of our government.

Or is the scaffolding a version of this?
Amoral oligarchy just keeps on propping up the predators?

Patrick Wyman's "The Verge: Reformation, Renaissance, and Forty Years that Shook the World" was an enjoyable read, in case you, like me, missed it when it was published in 2021.
Nice interweaving of the role of mega finance in warmongering.
(Ahem.😼)

Liked this so much I glued it together😼

My go-to book on debt is Louis Hyman's "Debtor Nation: the History of America in Red Ink"
Get those peasants/consumers indebted, collect the juice and get rich playing finance games sloshing it around from place to place.
Altho David Graeber had a point, too. Also. 😼

"Fascinating"? My initial reaction was "Jesus Fucking Christ!"🙀
Now feeling tremendously validated for pre-ordering Patrick Wyman's "Lost Worlds: How Humans Tried, Failed, Succeeded, and Built Our World"
Pre-history has some splainin' to do😺

I didn't want to read this, but felt obliged to anyway... got only this far before deciding I'd need to be sedated if I went any further.
BURN THIS FACILITY TO THE GROUND, BULLDOZE THE RUBBLE, SALT THE EARTH
Not even Prez Pedo Pal should be incarcerated there, fitting justice tho that might be

For some reason this pic of Kibum cheers me up.
No, I do not want to know why😺

Fantasizing about the meltdown of the Trump family crypto empire causing a nationwide financial crisis after reading Matt Levine today...😺

Richard White's "Railroaded: TheTranscontinents Making of Modern America" was a riveting read. Called to mind a history prof's remark that corruption in US politics was a huge lasting scar traceable to the railroads boom.
With Yuen Yuan Ang's work on US access corruption as extra sauce.

[cracks open Sapolsky's Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will]
Will try to re-read it without resorting to high-proof alcohol.

Kinda like a major mudslide barreling down from a mountaintop, with all the trimmings of broken trees, rocks, and bushes, destroying the village below?

Despite being an American, I actually know where this is and have been following the story. It's been awhile since Howard French's riveting "China's Second Continent," so interesting to see the empire building is continuing apace. Or maybe "interesting" isn't the right word...
