user0 on El Graun. Temporary custodian of the ThursdayQuiz https://thursdayquiz.org/quiz.html I used to have something funny on here. But now I have to be boring. Haven't done the age verification yet so you can't DM me.

I've already watched a documentary on it; it was called "Fahrenheit 451"

Squeezing itself out, just before this week's #ThursdayQuiz arrives, is last week's supplemental:

thursdayquiz.org/quiz-2025-10...

A lightweight, low-key one this week. But we have bearcats, nuns on the runs, and what to do with the aftermath of people who've had the runs. So all of life!

Been to the youngest’s harvest assembly.
Theory: every primary school built pre about 1980 in Britain has some version of this equipment. It is referred to as something like ‘the apparatus’.
No one has any memory of it ever being used.

I'm having the same problem. A centre-right programme would be austerity to permit slashing taxes on business and individuals.

The economic and political landscape just don't support that.
1000kindsofrain.bsky.social
Best case for a centre-right party? Enough Tories defect to Reform that the One Nation wing can reclaim the Tory husk.

But the few policies that haven't been claimed by either Labour or Reform aren't going to be very popular.

After the ills of social media mining outrage for profit, comes the ills of AI sycophancy bringing out everybody's inner Trump so no-one can hear a word of criticism without having a breakdown. Mmmm.

They should have gone for "bollocks".

"A residual belief that sooner or later the country would fall in love with the Tories again, without the party needing to change."

Isn't that what most Tory members believe, and why they elected her? "The country must change to love us or we'll have a strop, and then the nation will regret it."

The ThursdayQuiz has just sent its first password reset email.

The mail server bitched about there being no message id. (Pedant!) But I received it successfully.

I need to sort out reasonable protections before I let you lot use it. (It would have happened sooner but for those pesky quizzes...)

Top tip: when using node's `tls.connect()` method to connect to a multihomed host, do remember to set the `servername` property as, unlike https, it doesn't do SNI by default...

(Yup, I'm an idiot. 🤣)

Are you suggesting a "bot" that spots conversations and aggregates them? With the simplest bot being a set of search terms a user has configured "javascript || ecmascript || tc39 ...."

It could also repost content when authorised users mention it?

Exciting: I'm in the TC39 threads, and somebody has said `map.getOrInsert()` is present in Safari 18.4 and will be in Firefox 144 😁😁

I've been following this overdue proposal for years. (My code is littered with pollyfils for version were then changed...) So it's great it's finally shipping.
Map.prototype.getOrInsert() - JavaScript | MDN
The getOrInsert() method of Map instances returns the value corresponding to the specified key in this Map. If the key is not present, it inserts a new entry with the key and a given default value, an...

Yes, he's taken an easy answer ("turn back the clock") that's wrong.

Not since 1909-10, after which we introduced the parliament act to stop the Lords blocking finance bills.
1000kindsofrain.bsky.social
Isn't Trump trying to address exactly that?

Another supplemental quiz:

thursdayquiz.org/quiz-2025-09...

You've got swims, hydrology, competing towns, fin whales, vandalism, scientists, cowboys, world tram championships and mooses.

I don't know how long I'll keep this up.
1000kindsofrain.bsky.social
I guess we're all going to be campaigning to get the three-child cap lifted. *sigh*

#ThursdayQuiz Another supplemental quiz has been drafted. It needs a brush with a spellchecker and another edit. But I guess I'll release that tonight.

And the web server has just connected to the mail server. So there's progress there, too. 😀

i always appreciate your snap analyses, Andrew. Thanks.

One is not so much, but lots obscure the code. And that's before `matchAll()`, etc....

I now have a wrapper that spots capture groups prefixed "n$", strips the prefix, and turns the capture into a number. So currently `/(?<n$foo>\d+)/`

Having this built in, as say `/(?<#foo>\d+)/`, would be nice.
