“We can’t fix climate finance without fixing the global financial system.”
Gaya Sriskanthan calls out the holes in the bucket — debt, tax, and trade injustices — and reminds us what’s really possible if we redirected just 10% of military spending.

No justice without debt cancellation.

No peace without demilitarization.

No future without climate action.

Last night, Israeli military stopped the Freedom Flotilla. The costs of this operation, whose sole purpose was to continue the genocide in Gaza, shows the priorities of the Israeli government and of the world.

Help us fight for a multilateral treaty to reduce military spending by 10%, freeing up financial ressources to invest in climate protection, social security, or affordable housing.

For $1 Billion, you could build 20.000 units of housing (60m²), or build and fund between 10 and 100 schools. Alternatively, with $1 Billion, you could just spend $1,000 every day for 2,740 years.

This is madness.

This is a Patriot Anti-Air System. A single launcher costs $1 Billion and each missile costs $4 Million. Since 1976, 1106 of these launchers have been built, and over 10.000 missiles have been produced.

Our demand is modest: a global reallocation of just 10% of military spending toward climate protection, social safety, and welfare.

Once in service, the fuel consumption of tanks, jet fighters, and warships is enormous — not to mention the human cost of the wars and conflicts in which these weapons are used.

Contrary to what Trump claims, climate change is real — and militarism is a major driver of it. Arms production is highly emissions-intensive.
10percentforall.bsky.social
According to UN data from their recent report “The Security We Need”, a 12-minute flight of an F-35 jet fighter produces as much CO₂ emissions as an average petrol car does in an entire year.

From challenging the priorities of powerful states to exposing the failures of current financing mechanisms, the discussion will spotlight how redirecting just a fraction of global war budgets could help repair climate harm and build a future rooted in peace and solidarity.

will speak about the current needs in the field of climate financing, and show how cutting military spending and cancelling illegitimate debt can generate the resources needed to tackle this.

Join us as we examine how vast military budgets, which fuel war and destruction, could instead be redirected to confront the climate crisis and advance justice for communities on the frontlines.

Africa needs $70 bn/year for climate adaptation; in 2023 it received just $14.8 bn, now at risk of falling as donors cut aid.

Meanwhile world #military expenditure reached $2.7 tn in 2024, rising by 9.4% from 2023. www.context.news/climate-just...

World military expenditure reached $$2.7 trillion in 2024 - leaving less for climate financing

Nothing against Brasil, but another one? And this time it would only be the CO2 emmissions, not the beautiful beaches, rivers and forests...

Of course military spending is not a good way to spend the money of tax payers. But at least it creates jobs, right? Well, yes, but way less than investments in other, more useful areas, as the recent UN study highlights:

We propose an internatinoal treaty to use mere 10% of the enormous military spending for social security instead. Spread the word to make this a reality!

Meanwhile, $ 5 Trillion over 12 years would fund education in lower income countries. $2.3 - 2.8 Trillion over 10 years would eliminate the extreme poverty gap globally. Spending the money of military instead is a political choice, so another choice can be made.
10percentforall.bsky.social
The UN Report on increasing global military spending points out the problem: $2.7 Trillion, the same as the GDP of all countries in Africa, are being spent on tanks, war planes, missiles, guns etc in 2024 alone.

There is always money when it comes to weapons.
But when it comes to overcome crises or people’s well-being, education, health care, or housing, suddenly we hear the word “austerity.”

It is time to ask: what does real security mean? Missiles and tanks, or dignity and safety for all?

Labour’s “defense-led growth” isn’t about protecting Ukrainians. It’s about subsidizing BAE Systems & friends. A war economy doesn’t build security; it builds dependence on permanent conflict.
Keir Starmer’s plan for UK growth – the Ukraine war
The Labour government’s increase in military spending and its extraordinary new agreement with Ukraine are platforms for the UK arms industry

Let us remember not only the horror but also the hope: the global movements that rose from the ashes, the survivors who turned grief into activism, and the possibility of building a world free from nuclear weapons.
