Too bad then. If you can't make a product that respects consumer rights then you shouldn't make that product.

You mentioned Stop Killing Games, and I'm responding in the context of Stop Killing Games.

If companies don't want to release source code, they'd plan out something that doesn't require that. Yes, this stuff will require extra work to transition industry practice over, but we wouldn't have any regulations at all if that was a dealbreaker.

Also I find it very hard to believe that these companies would choose going out of business and losing all their money instead of giving in. In fact a new market would be created to provide solutions for SKG compliance.

Middleware companies wouldn't need to provide the tooling or source code to the players. Just as they have their tooling implemented in a compiled game that people play, the same applies to compiled server software. Licenses to prevent unauthorized use would still exist.

3. This doesn't require sideloading new code onto consoles or any self compilation. Server software would be a separate application and service stack for PCs or an officially released console app which the game would then communicate with through API calls.

1. Then don't use that code that talks to a devkit if it even exists.

2. SKG would not be retroactive. 99% of Dreamcast games are SKG compliant already cause they aren't online only!

It's a case of them not wanting to, not that it's not possible. If console makers don't budge to allow connecting to 3rd party servers or whatever other solution, they'd miss out on getting those games at all on their platform and the revenue cut from them.

Games designed with SKG in mind wouldn't be needing to talk to devkits in the first place because consumers obviously don't have access to that. The situation would be impossible, failing SKG compliance and thus wouldn't be made like that. Server software doesn't need to be open source either.

When it becomes a requirement and planned for in advance (not retroactively), middleware companies will have no choice but to open up if they want that business. If a lot of work is what it takes to solve this then I'd take that lot of work.

presentation wise it misses but its good in all the other departments, replayability, good multiplayer, good unique concept putting you on your toes even more than usual. on the other hand is Move It which does have up to par presentation but is lacking in all the other departments.

If you can find a working spotify lossless ripper you could compare the 2 raw files to see which end the change is on. I have access to an apple ripper.
