Fall foliage on Spruce Mountain in Smugglers Notch, Stowe VT, last weekend. The color was past its peak, but the fires of autumn were still burning beneath Elephant’s Head.

#Fall #Autumn #Landscape #Photography #NaturePhotography #Vermont #Eastcoastkin
This is Ndakinna seen from the sunlit slopes below Elephant’s Head in Smugglers’ Notch.
In Abanaki language, the word for homeland also means the place that takes care of us. Here we find the wind that ripples through the golden spruce and birch, and cliffs that will collect the snow in their shadows until spring. The cliffs here are ancient volcanic stone, gray and ruggedly textured, but the Abanaki think of them as relatives... elders who have been listening longer than we have been speaking. Each fall the forest shifts from green to fire, and for a few days the mountains seem to remember their own creation, burning again in color that glows against the gray rock. The color passes quickly, yet its warmth stays in our memories and our stories. To walk here is to move through both past and present at once, the human story and the older one beneath it. Even as visitors pause for photos, with the fires of autumn burning behind them, the land keeps teaching patience, resilience, and return. In every season, Elephant’s Head reminds us that belonging is not about ownership; it’s about relationship.

I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous.

Red-breasted Nuthatch foraging at the end of a pine branch, Frederick County, Autumn 2025. These birds are uncommon here, and I was lucky to find one on a low perch with a clear view.

A Red-breasted Nuthatch clings sideways to the end of a dead pine branch, its compact body set against a soft, green-gray blur of pine forest. The slate-blue back contrasts with its warm, rusty-red breast and flanks, while a bold black eye stripe cuts across the pale face. Its sharp, slightly upturned bill points outward, caught in a brief pause before the bird returned to probing the soft wood for insects.

Rising out of the lake and fog

#photography #NaturePhotography #landscape
Dense green and gold foliage of a mini-peninsula mirrored on a lake’s glassy surface. Fog hovers just beyond the trees on both sides, slightly obscuring the distant shorelines.

From black water comes fire; from silence, a song. Waterlily Court at Longwood Gardens.

#waterlily #photography #BloomScrolling #Eastcoastkin
One warm morning Frog and Toad sat together on a wide lily pad. A purple flower beside them swayed gently, its petals shining like silk and its golden center smelling faintly of honey warmed by the sun.

“Frog,” said Toad, “do you think lilies have an easy life?”

“They are very still,” said Frog. “They wait for the sun. They wait for the bees. They wait for the rain. That is their whole life.”

Toad thought for a moment. “That sounds restful. Let us be lilies today.”

So Frog and Toad sat very still on the lily pad. The pad rocked softly beneath them, carrying the scent of wet leaves and cool water.

A dragonfly with glassy wings darted past, making the air hum. Toad wanted to swat at it, but Frog whispered, “Lilies do not swat. Lilies wait.”

A beetle crawled over Toad’s damp toes, leaving tiny tracks of mud. He wanted to shake it off, but Frog said, “Lilies do not shake. Lilies are steady.”

Clouds drifted across the sky like slow white boats, and the water below rippled with silver rings. A fly zipped so close Toad could almost taste its sweetness. His tongue twitched. “Lilies do not snap,” said Frog kindly.

The sun grew warmer. The pond smelled of green stems and moss, of blossoms just beginning to open. A bee landed on the flower beside them, burying itself in golden dust and humming happily.

Toad sighed. “Being a lily is harder than it looks.”

“Yes,” said Frog. “But now we know why they are so beautiful. They are full of patience.”

The two friends laughed, rocked gently on their pad, and decided tomorrow they would be frogs and toads again.

That’s beautiful. And not easy to get it that uniformly sharp.

Nice! The bird really pops against that background.

I’ve been a relatively constant presence in his life lately. 😆 I think he’s realized that I can’t fly, I’m not very fast, I don’t eat Green Herons, and I’m not trying to steal his fish. All this puts me in a category of lesser concern.
