I wrote my thesis on how the US and China’s divergent approaches to cyberspace would lead to this while in a dual degree program split between the two countries (Tsinghua/SAIS) a decade ago. It’s been surreal watching it play out the way it has, both in ways I anticipated and ways I did not.

This may be somewhat intentional as it allows Apple to check the box as having AI for investors and consumers without risking much controversy while they wait for the technology to mature. Avoiding 404 Media stories sounds like the kind of thing Apple would prioritize highly.
