Et l’œuvre originale ? Après avoir été vendue par le curé de Soudeilles au marchand londonien Henri James Duveen, elle est achetée par le collectionneur américain John Pierpont Morgan. Il la rend à la France et la donne au musée du Louvre en 1911. La copie quant à elle regagne l’église en 1913.

I love the identical maenads in both of the Dionysian frescoes below - the one on the left is from the Villa dei Misteri (my bad shot, since we couldn't see it at the right angle, and it was in the dark), the right from the House of the Thiasus. More evidence for ancient pattern books, I think. 🏺

On the first day of the #Saturnalia festival, a Princeps Saturnalia was appointed among the household by throwing the dice. The King of Saturnalia presided over and commanded people to do things such as preparing a banquet or singing a song. 🪔
