I've recently moved to St. John's, Newfoundland, to start work as the Pratt Fellow in History at Memorial University. I look forward to researching duelling and honour among army officers while getting to know this beautiful part of the world.

This Cambridge engineering wing was built in memory of physicist John Hopkinson and his son John Gustave, victims of an 1898 mountaineering accident. Absent from the plaque: Alice and Lina Evelyn Hopkinson, who died with their father and brother in the same Alpine mishap.

Interesting to hear @1812andallthat.bsky.social present on disabled veteran Shadrack Byfield & the War of 1812 for @nationalarmymuseum.bsky.social this afternoon! Byfield had his arm amputated & later had an attachment made so that he could return to weaving (which obvs interested me lots) #DisHist
Opening slide of a presentation. The slide is predominantly green with black text reading: Searching for Shadrack Byfield. There is a drawing of two men to the left side of the slide: of notice is the man facing the viewers who has a wooden artificial leg.

Looking forward to giving this Friday lunchtime talk about a War of 1812 veteran who lost an arm, wrote multiple memoirs and designed his own prosthesis. Register to attend either in person and online.

breaking into the exhibit and putting this thing on to gain the Power of Free Speech but the first thing that comes out of my mouth is “Barry Lyndon is too long” and the crowd immediately turns on me

norman rockwell’s famous “freedom of speech” oil painting an old jacket in a glass case, which belonged to the model in the painting

Monument in Waterford Christ Church cathedral to South Devon militiamen who died at the close of the 1798 rebellion in Ireland. Notable as a very early war memorial commemorating individual soldiers by name.

'The Lawsuit' - two men fight over a cow, while the lawyer milks the profits! (18th century bronze plaque, from The Black and White House in Hereford, England).

Ouch! (from a book review...)
He thought he knew the answers before he began and nothing in the sources was allowed to spring out and surprise him. Yet openness to surprise is one thing that makes works of history original, and fun. History, like music, is a highly skilled enter-prise, not always best performed by amateurs.

Great to see the Crown Forces Drums turning out in force for the Waterloo 210th anniversary proceedings.

So our marvellous Drums were out in Brussels and created a stir!

Video to follow in the future but they made me extremely proud!

Bon voyage! Enjoy the Waterloo events.

It may be one of those dates folks think they know and so don’t bother to check.
1812andallthat.bsky.social
Very true, and exact dates aren’t the most important thing by any stretch. But I continue to be amazed by the number of historians who insist on mentioning the precise month and day of the Battle of Waterloo, only to get it wrong.
