The Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia has a manumission paper from John Custis, Martha Washington’s father in law. He had a son, Jack, with a woman he enslaved named Alice, then freed them both when he died. Martha was step mother to Jack Custis until he died too early as a teenager.
