The cut flesh turns reddish, then reddish-brown and finally black. Blackened fruitbodies persist for several months.

If I were still managing Landguard Nature Reserve, I would be getting ready to put the beach cordons up at the beginning of February. This would give the Ringed Plovers plenty of time to settle in without being disturbed
