Over 350 academic historians have signed an open letter condemning “attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community” from the Labour government.
Published on Friday (2 May), the open letter expresses significant concerns over the government’s treatment of trans issues […]

More prosaically, the Office of Public Works is worried about damage to the cairn from the huge number of visitors. They'd probably like a few more people to keep that climb as an unfulfilled dream ... and I hope that they get as much pleasure as do I from keeping the dream unfulfilled.

END OF […]

Anyway, most dreams are never going to happen. Life is an adventure, but a short one. All of us can only ever fulfil a tiny fraction of our dreams. I find myself surpringly delighted that something so close will remain one of my unfulfilled dreams.

But unlike poor Lucy, I'm fine with that. In fact, I find myself very happy about it. It's good to be winding down with an incomplete to-do list, leaving something for the next incarnation, if there is one. Just as radio has much better pictures than television, unvisited monuments are more […]

Now, another decade and a half has gone. The woman recalling her dream is in her sixties, older than my granny was when I pestered her. I am not injured or disabled, but my strength has gone. My mountain-climbing and hill-walking days are over.

Lucy Jordan realised that she'd never ride through […]

By the time I was a young adult, my attentions were elsewhere. My gran had sold up and left Sligo, and I had no reason to return. Twenty years later, when my Mum had returned to live in Sligo, my visits were short and programmed. There was no opportunity to go climbing.

Another decade later, I […]

Just as in real life, the answer in my dream was a gentle bur steady "no". I don't recall the excuses, but in hindsight neither woman was outdoorsy. My gran had a thriving business to run, and my mum a bad back. And they were not going to let a seven-year-old climb a mountain alone, so it didn't […]

I didn't know then that the Miosgán Meadhbha was older than the Egyptian pyramids, which were lazily built on flat ground rather than on a mountain top. (The pharaohs should have hired Irish builders.) But I wanted to go, so in my dream I pestered my mum and my gran, just as I had done many […]

I had long since been told about Maebdh, and her resting place in sight of gran's house. In my mind I conflated her with tales of Granuaile, the great pirate queen from neighbouring Mayo. I wanted to visit Maedbh's grave, to look down on the landscape that this mighty woman had ruled some 200 […]

Knocknarea was about five miles away as the crow flies. The mountain was often capped with a cloud, obscuring the cairn, and sometimes hidden entirely by rain or mist. But in my dream, it was a clear day, and the cairn was visible.

My dream had me about seven years old, back in my grandmother's house above the road to Rosses Point, where the generous windows had a clear view south across the inner leg of Sligo Bay. Close by, in the narrow channel near the shore, passed the few ships which still visited the once-bustling […]

THREAD: I dreamt last night of Miosgán Meadhbha, the five thousand year-old stone cairn that allegedly contains the grave of Queen Maeve.

Aerial photograph of Miosgán Meadhbha, the 5,000-year-old cairn on top of Knocknarea. It is believed to be a passage tomb containing the grave of Queen Maedbh, who was buried upright.

At the top of the image is the heading "Dreaming of Miosgán Meadhbha".

The Tory conference is almost empty. The lobbyists have moved on, the voters have moved on, and so now the members have moved on.

However, Gerry Hassan notes how the TV pictures are carefully controlled to hide how empty & small it is. The images look controlled […]

Image of black text ona white background:

The ECHR is not merely an international agreement; it is a cornerstone of civil liberties, enshrining rights that protect individuals from arbitrary state power and ensure justice, fairness, and dignity for all. Its origins trace back to the aftermath of World War II, but its spirit echoes the foundational tenets of British liberty as embodied in the Magna Carta of 1215.

The Magna Carta, often hailed as the bedrock of constitutional governance, established that no one—not even the sovereign—is above the law, limiting executive overreach and guaranteeing due process.

The ECHR builds upon this legacy, adapting these ancient protections to modern challenges and safeguarding the very freedoms that make Britain a beacon of democracy.

"Gavin’s name will remain on the ballot paper.

His withdrawal will just mean that he won’t do anything to try to persuade people to back him.

Which, to be fair, describes how his campaign worked from the start."
